Comment: How to edit binary kstars dat files? Answer by Akarsh Simha
The file kstars/data/README.binfileformat explains the binary file
format used in the .dat file in some detail.
 .
The tools in the kstars/data/tools/ directory can be used to generate
the data files from SQL databases containing the star data. The
purpose and usage of the tools are explained in the README.tools in
 the same directory.
 .
The source for the .dat files is from ASCII data files supplied by
USNO (for the NOMAD catalog) and (for example) NASA (for the Tycho
catalog). The ASCII files are rather large to be part of the release,
but I think I will some day (most likely during this summer) write a
script that converts the binary data file back into an SQL database.
 .
The SQL database details are still undocumented, but the source code
in perl contains a "CREATE TABLE" instruction that explains what
fields the scripts expect in the database.
