% README of the french style files distribution for \AllTeX 97/12/10 % Copyright GUTenberg-Bernard Gaulle as in french.doc % CAUTION : ALL FILES HAVE CHANGED since the last distribution. This material was designed to help (La)TeX users to print french documents i.e. according to french typographic habits. [The checksum field that appears in allmost files contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.] Before installation ask yourself the question: is my TeX engine installation able to process any 8-bit character (ie a char with decimal code upper than 127)? If not, may be you don't have: either the good fonts (look at the EC for example), or the good TeX V3 motor (look also at MlTeX). The french style directory, as distributed by his author is composed of other directories. The main directory hosts the following files and directories: (The number of bytes of this README may differ) %%>============================================================================ total 1316 lrwxrwxrwx 1 gaulle 6 Aug 18 1993 ALIRE -> README -rw------- 1 gaulle 253208 Jan 30 15:30 ALIRE.dvi -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 817352 Jan 30 15:31 ALIRE.ps -rw------- 1 gaulle 41032 Jan 30 15:37 Changements -rw------- 1 gaulle 4053 Jan 30 15:37 Copyright -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 18614 Jan 13 1997 DROIT.tex -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 18556 Sep 26 15:09 FAQ -rw------- 1 gaulle 1080 Jan 30 15:37 FTPinfos -rw------- 1 gaulle 1137 Jan 30 15:37 GUTenberg -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 10651 Jan 28 10:52 Makefile.unx drwxr-xr-x 2 gaulle 512 Jan 30 15:37 MlTeX -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 6979 Jan 28 16:55 README -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 1089 Jul 5 1995 REGISTER drwxr-xr-x 3 gaulle 512 Nov 4 14:21 contrib -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 773 Dec 30 1996 directex.txt drwxr-xr-x 2 gaulle 512 Jan 30 15:39 doc -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 1268 Aug 25 10:31 emtex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 3074 Jan 27 16:09 frmsgOK -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 3143 Jan 27 16:09 frmsgPB -rw------- 1 gaulle 72834 Jan 30 15:37 history drwxr-xr-x 3 gaulle 1024 Jan 30 15:37 initex drwxr-xr-x 2 gaulle 1536 Jan 30 15:37 inputs -rw------- 1 gaulle 4765 Jan 30 15:37 kb2lex.tex -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 15719 Jan 30 13:58 kb7to8.c -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 12004 Jan 30 13:59 kb8to7.c -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 1260 Sep 26 17:17 latexenv -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 203 Dec 10 11:07 main.patchlex -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 685 Dec 30 1996 microtex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 851 Jan 15 1997 miktex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 752 Dec 17 1996 oztex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 713 Dec 17 1996 pastex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 3896 Feb 17 1997 pctex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 4169 Oct 28 09:33 tetex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 1044 Dec 17 1996 textures.txt drwxr-xr-x 2 gaulle 1024 Jan 30 15:39 tst -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 664 Dec 30 1996 vtex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 758 Dec 30 1996 web2ctex.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 gaulle 694 Dec 17 1996 yandytex.txt %%<============================================================================ Quick description of contents: ALIRE : this file. ALIRE.dvi : (in fact: frenchlu.dvi) PRINT IT FIRST, here is the installation procedure to follow --in french. ALIRE.ps : (the same in PostScript) *.txt : simple text related to any known TeX engine, few recommandations for installation (sometimes still to write). Changements : (in french) list of improvments. Copyright : you must read it to know your rights and your duties. DROIT.tex : a french doc. about Internet rights & duties (regard. software) FAQ : basic Frequently Asked Questions about (All)TeX and french. FTPinfos : warning about binary files (for ftp users). GUTenberg : just a pointer to the french association of users. Makefile.unx : author's Makefile for Unix, to configure. MlTeX dir. : for information about Multi-Lingual TeX. README : this file. REGISTER : some warnings for you if you don't accept to be registered. contrib dir. : you will find other language-styles running friendly with the french style. Look at its README file. doc directory : the source files to produce the documentation. frmsgOK : the message you will send after installation. frmsgPB : the message you may send if any pb is encountered. history : backgroud changes prior the previous distribution initex dir. : look at its README for the INITEX time material (contains a subdirectory for testing purposes) inputs dir. : here are the files used for input to (All)TeX kb2lex.tex : a (La)TeX pgm generating .lex files in order to generate 7-bit <==> 8-bit translators. For people having no lex pgm, the following is provided (lex output): kb7to8.c : a sample C pgm to translate 7-bit to 8-bit accordingly to "my" keyboard.dat (given in directory inputs) kb8to7.c : a sample C pgm to transle 8-bit to 7-bit accordingly to "my" keyboard.dat (given in directory inputs) Those sample contain the following file which can stand for a patch for LEX when no main program is generated (CC complain): main.patchlex : main pgm to merge with yy.lex.c for bypassing pbs. latexenv : environnement setting example to configure to your own needs. tst directory : useful tests for french.sty validation. (torture tests). YOUR "TO DO" LIST: ================= 1- Print and read ALIRE.dvi or ALIRE.ps (which is in french). This is the users guide and the installation guide _for you_. A users guide is also provided in the doc directory, this one is _for users_. Print also the file *.txt where * is the name of your TeX engine (web2c, textures, tetex, ...). 2- Are you willing to create a new format with the french files? If yes, go to the initex directory and then come back here. 3- Are you willing to use keyboard.dat? for example to generate 7-bit <==> 8-bit translators, so update it in directory inputs, if not already done for initex. 4- kb7to8 and kb8to7 generation: look at kb2lex.tex 5- If you are not using the default keyboard encoding, translate f7abbrev.tex to frabbrev.tex via any pgm like kb7to8. 6- Go to the tst directory for validation. 7- If not already done: copy the inputs directory to your usual directory TEXINPUT (i.e. for everybody). 8- Drop me the registration message frmsgOK. Optionally, look at the contrib directory. I hope you enjoy it, Bernard GAULLE ==============================================================================
