Please note that all manpages have subsection extension plan9, and are
typeset with the plan9 macro package, so you need to use:
$ zcat /usr/share/man/man1/awk.1plan9.gz | /usr/lib/plan9/bin/troff -N -man
to read the manpage of the plan9 awk.

Alternatively, nowadays you can use the man command to read each manpage.
E.g., to read the manpage of the plan9 awk:
$ man /usr/share/man/man1/awk.1plan9.gz
