This function is nearly identical to <code>fmt</code>; see <a href="FMT.html">fmt</a>. The only
difference is that <code>fmt</code> may insert backslash (\) characters when
forced to print past the right margin in order to make the output a
bit clearer in that case. Use <code>fmt!</code> instead if you want to be able
to read the forms back in.
