Replace the part of \f[C]us1\f[] in the byte interval
[\f[C]start_pos1\f[], \f[C]end_pos1\f[]) with the contents of
\f[C]us2\f[].
\f[C]start_pos1\f[] cannot be less than 0.
If \f[C]start_pos1\f[] is past the end of \f[C]us1\f[] then the space
between the end of the string and \f[C]start_pos1\f[] will be padded
with NUL (\f[C]\[aq]\\0\[aq]\f[]) bytes.
