README.debugging
This file contains information on reporting bugs so that the bnetd
developers have a good chance of fixing them. We hate to see bugs in
the server, but we don't always know about them unless you tell us.
It is important to include relevant information about your hardware,
operating system, etc when reporting bugs because problems sometimes
only occur on specific setups.
REPORTING NON-CRASHING BUGS
- First check in the bnetd forums at http://www.bnetd.org/phorum to
see if it is a well known problem with the release you are using.
- Next check the FAQ at http://www.bnetd.org/docs.phtml?doc=faq.html
to see if it is a long standing bug or "feature in disguise".
- If the server is hanging and not responding type
"killall -SEGV bnetd" or "kill -SEGV <pid>" and use the instructions
below under "REPORTING CRASHES". Be sure to note that the server was
hung in your description of the problem.
- Gather a short description of the problem, steps to reproduce it if
you know them, and the bnetd.log if useful.
- Post them to the bnetd forums at http://www.bnetd.org/phorum/ and/or
mail them to bnetd-dev@igateway.net.
REPORTING CRASHES
If you suffer from bnetd core dumps and need some help then we
recommend you do the following:
- Add debug to loglevels in bnetd.conf (if it wasn't already on) and
restart the server and reproduce the core. You will need to run the
server with the "-f" option from a directory which it has write
permission in order to get a core file (unless it runs as root).
- Be sure that you compiled bnetd with the -g flag, otherwise the core
file will not be very useful.
- Make a tar file of the core, the bnetd executable, the bnetd.log, and
a short description of what was going on at the time. Either send a
URL for these items or a COMPRESSED attachment to:
bnetd-dev@igateway.net
We'll try to figure out why it crashed. If you send us anything other
than these things it is likely your problem will not be solved. It is
difficult enough to track down problems sometimes; without the proper
information it is nearly impossible.
