README.ladder
This file contains information about ladder games, ranking, game
reports, etc.
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Ladder play.
We have implemented Ladder play that should mimic the way Blizzard does
it on Battle.net(R), using an extended Elo rating system. This computes a
probability to win and then assigns points based upon that probability
and the outcome of the game. The number of possible points decreases
as a player advances.
PLAYING
To create or join a ladder game a user must:
- have won 10 or more regular games
- select a game type of Ladder
- select a map designated for Ladder play when selecting the game map,
found in the ladder subdirectory under Browse
- be using a Starcraft(R) or Brood War(R) client
(Note that Ladder games run only in Fast speed)
A player can use the Ladder button from the Chat screen to view current
standings.
RANKINGS
Current rankings are computed automatically. To make the current set
of ladder stats the active ones, an admin should run the
/ladderactivate command. Blizzard usually makes new active ratings
available at midnight each day. Note that where there is a tie in the
ratings the order is based off of other stats. For example, if two
players have the same rating, the number of ladder wins will be used as
the tie breaker; if the wins are also the same, the total number of
games will be used, etc.
REPORTS
Reports are generated for each ladder game. A game report lists the
winner and losers in a game and their individual scores (for minerals,
units, etc) as seen at the end of a game. By default only ladder games
get a game report written. It is possible to generate a report for
non-ladder games by setting report_all_games to true in the bnetd.conf
file.
You can do what you like with these reports, Blizzard puts them into a
Forum for all to see. They also use them to track abuse of ladder
games such as using bogus characters to beat up on in order to increase
their ladder ranking.
LIMITATIONS
At the moment the following limitations exist:
- a few of the more obscure rules (top 20 ranked players do not gain
points for winning someone ranked 1001 or worse) are not
implemented.
- disconnects may not be logged properly
- the last game played (time) field does not show properly under on
the Ladder Rankings screen.
- results for a 8 players game are still unchecked.
STABILITY
Rob has run the server at a couple of LAN parties, and had mixed
results. We believe that it is working ok now. Both Rob and Ross have
run many two player ladder games successfully. We would be interested
in hearing your results if you try the server out, bad or good.
(Actually, especially for bad results.)
Denis has also run the server in a couple a LAN parties with between
4 to 6 players. All seemed to be OK.
