This rule applies during overload resolution of function templates: When <a href="function_template.html#Template_argument_substitution" title="cpp/language/function template">substituting</a> the <a href="template_argument_deduction.html" title="cpp/language/template argument deduction">deduced type</a> for the template parameter fails, the specialization is discarded from the <a href="overload_resolution.html" title="cpp/language/overload resolution">overload set</a> instead of causing a compile error.
