device-mapper for Debian
------------------------

The libdevmapper1.01 package contains userspace libraries for things
that use the kernel device-mapper (such as LVM2 and EVMS). In order
to be useful, kernel support for device-mapper should be enabled.

Debian and all 2.6 kernels have device-mapper included, though only
the more recent have all the features; 2.4.27+ or 2.6.8+ are recommended.
If you are running a 2.4 kernel compiled from kernel.org sources you
will need to apply the device-mapper patches from the devmapper source
tarball or from http://sources.redhat.com/dm/patches.html.

Note that device-mapper (with LVM2) is a replacement for LVM. With
2.4 kernels, lvm-mod and dm-mod may be loaded simultaneously without
any problems. lvm-mod is not available in 2.6, only dm-mod.
