It can be helpful to create tags in the Debian format, e.g:

  git tag -m 'Upstream 7.x v1.0' upstream/1.0 7.x-1.0

and then build the package:

  git-buildpackage --git-upstream-branch=7.x-1.x --git-debian-branch=debian -rfakeroot
