#!CDarkGreen #!N  #!Rall121 Example 8. Series Data #!N #!EC #!N #!N
This example illustrates how a 7-step time series of a single
scalar field might be imported. The field is on a regular
5 * 5 grid, the data are connections dependent, and the
style is record. #!CForestGreen #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N # Time-Series Data

#!N 1. In the Data Prompter initial dialog box, select #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*
Grid or Scattered File #!EF , select the leftmost button in
the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Grid type #!EF row (regular grid) and deactivate the
 #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   Single time step #!EF toggle button. #!N #!I30 #!N 2.
Confirm that the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Block #!EF toggle button is activated and
click on #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Describe Data #!EF . The #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Full prompter
#!EF dialog box appears. (Because this example #!F-adobe-times-medium-i-normal--18* requires #!EF the
full prompter, the simplified dialog box is not accessible.) #!N #!I30
#!N 3. Enter the path name of the data file in
the  #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   Data file #!EF field: #!CForestGreen #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N
/usr/lpp/dx/samples/data/record_series #!EF #!N #!N #!EC #!N #!I30 #!N 4. Activate the
 #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   Header #!EF toggle button. #!N #!I30 #!N 5. Step 4
also enables the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* # of bytes #!EF button to the
right. Click on this button and select #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* string marker #!EF
. #!N #!I30 #!N 6. Enter "Time Step 1 \n" in
the associated text field to #!Rsvarx86 specify that the data file
is to be read starting with the line after "Time Step
1" (see Note). Alternatively, selecting #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* # of lines #!EF and
specifying the value "2" in the text field would produce the
same result. Note: The new-line character "\n" must be included in
the specification, and the spacing between it and the marker must
match that in the data file (e.g., if "Time Step 1"
and "\n" are separated by three spaces in the file, they
must be separated by three spaces in the specification). This spacing
is easily determined in the Data Browser by placing the cursor
at each point and reading the corresponding offset value (see #!Ldp618,dxall170 f Figure 18 #!EL
). #!N #!N #!I30 #!N 7. Enter the value "5" in
each of the first two #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Grid size #!EF fields. #!N
#!I30 #!N 8. Activate the  #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   Series #!EF toggle button and
specify the number of series members by entering the value "7"
in the associated #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* n #!EF field. (Leave the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* start
#!EF and  #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   delta #!EF fields unchanged.) #!N #!I30 #!N 9.
Activate the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* Series separator #!EF toggle button, select #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* #
of lines #!EF , and enter the value "1" in the
associated text field. (When the Import module reads the data file,
it will skip the lines "Time Step 2," "Time Step 3,"
and so on.) #!N #!I30 #!N 10. Change  #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   Dependency #!EF
from "positions" to "connections." To confirm this change, click on #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*
Modify #!EF at the bottom of the dialog box (note the
instruction there). #!N #!I30 #!N 11. Repeat Example 1, Step 10
(see #!Lex1a,dxall116 s To save the header file #!EL ), to save the header file, which should look
like: #!N #!I0 #!N #!EF #!N #!CForestGreen #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N
file = /usr/lpp/dx/samples/data/record_series #!N grid = 5 x 5 #!N format
= text #!N interleaving = record #!N majority = row #!N
header = marker "Time Step 1 \n" #!N series = 7,
1, 1, separator = lines 1 #!N field = field0 #!N
structure = scalar #!N type = float #!N dependency = connections
#!N positions = regular, regular, 0, 1, 0, 1 #!N #!N
end #!EF #!N #!N #!EC #!N #!N Note: For scalar data,
as in this example, the #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* interleaving #!EF keyword is not
required (it defaults to record). However, when series data include vectors,
this keyword must be included and the appropriate value specified. For
more information, see  #!Lintrkwd,dxall148 h interleaving  #!EL  . #!N #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-times-medium-i-normal--18*   Next Topic
