Information about Version 4.16
==============================================
Updating from older versions
----------------------------
IMPORTANT: If you are updating from an older version of EAGLE, please make
********* sure you read the file doc/UPDATE entirely before working
with this new version!
Tutorial
--------
The EAGLE tutorial in PDF format can be found in the /english/tutorial
subdirectory on the EAGLE CD-ROM.
If you have downloaded EAGLE from CadSoft's homepage you may also want
to download the tutorial file.
Sytem Requirements
------------------
- Intel PC based Linux
- Kernel version 2.x
- libc6
- X11 in at least 8bpp mode with 1024x768 min. resolution
(800x600 with some minor restrictions)
Installation
------------
You can either use the RPM or the TGZ archive to install EAGLE on your
system.
Installing the RPM archive:
- Use 'rpm' to install the package:
rpm -i /media/cdrom/english/linux/install/eagle-lin-eng-4.16-1.i386.rpm
By default this package installs to '/opt/eagle', but you can relocate
it to a different directory using rpm's '--prefix' option. Note that
a shell script will be executed that installs a symbolic link to the
executable file in /usr/bin, and also copies the manual page to
/usr/share/man/man1 (or /usr/man/man1, if the first directory doesn't
exist). You can use rpm's '--noscripts' option to avoid this.
- Enter the command '/opt/eagle/bin/eagle' to invoke the product
registration (you need to have WRITE ACCESS to that directory for
doing this!).
Installing the TGZ archive:
- Open a "shell" window.
- Become 'root' by entering the command
su
- If you are installing from CD-ROM, enter the command
/media/cdrom/english/linux/install/installation
and wait until it has ended.
- If you are installing the downloaded TGZ archive, enter the commands
tar xzf eagle-lin-eng-4.16.tgz
eagle-lin-eng-4.16/install
and wait until they have ended.
- Enter the command
eagle
to invoke the product registration.
- Close the EAGLE window and the Terminal.
- NOTE: the installation procedure described here is not mandatory.
You can just extract the TGZ archive to any location of your choice
and use it there directly. All the 'install' script does is to copy
the program and man-page to the default location and set up a
symbolic link to the executable in /usr/bin/eagle.
If you want to install EAGLE to a different location than
/opt/eagle, you can add the name of that directory to the
installation calls above. For instance, if you would rather have EAGLE
installed to /usr/local/eagle, this would be
/media/cdrom/english/linux/install/installation /usr/local/eagle
or
eagle-lin-eng-4.16/install /usr/local/eagle
respectively.
Usage
-----
To use EAGLE you should create a working directory
mkdir /home/username/eagle
change into that directory
cd /home/username/eagle
and start EAGLE
eagle
Octagon apertures in Gerber RS-274X format
------------------------------------------
The various Gerber viewers on the market have different ideas about how to
display octagon apertures in RS-274X format. There all all kinds of
interpretations of the diameter and rotation.
When generating octagon apertures in RS-274X format, EAGLE assumes that the
viewer will interpret the diameter as the distance between two opposite
corners, and that it has to be rotated by 22.5 degrees to achieve the
proper alignment. In case your specific viewer interprets these data
differently you can adjust this to your viewer's special needs in the file
'eagle.def'.
IMPORTANT: Before sending data in RS-274X format to your board house youi
should make sure you ask them how *their* software will interpret octagon
data.
Platforms
---------
Board, schematic and library files created with EAGLE version 4.11 or later
can be exchanged between Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. The binary data
format is the same on all platforms.
Autorouter job files that have been created with EAGLE for Mac OS X can't
be processed with EAGLE for Linux or EAGLE for Windows (and vice versa).
Floppy drive for licensing
--------------------------
During the licensing process EAGLE reads a file named license.key from
the provided floppy disk (not applicable to the Freeware version).
If your particular system doesn't have a floppy disk drive, you can copy
the license.key file on an other system that has a floppy drive, and use
a network connection, USB stick, CD-ROM or whatever media to transfer the
file to your system. In that case please make sure that, for security
reasons, you delete the license.key file from your system after using it
to register EAGLE.
