WHY DPATCH AND HOW TO HANDLE IT
===============================
firebird2 source package uses dpatch. This is because I like separating each
change to the source tree in its own file and I like documenting its reasons of
existence along with the change itself. I also like to keep the diff.gz clean
of source changes. If all diff.gz contains is debian/ then I'm sure I am not
changing something unintentionally.
How to handle dpatch
====================
0. Getting a patched tree for review
debian/rules patch
But please read below if you want to modify a patch or add new one.
The tree is cleaned up with
debian/rules unpatch
1. Add new patch
dpatch stores an ordered list of patches to apply in debian/patches/00list.
Whether you add new patch, using either of the methods below, you must manually
insert the patch name in debian/patches/00list at the desired position.
1.1 Independent from other patches
dpatch-edit-patch patch <new patch name>
dpatch extracts a clean source tree and gives you a shell. Edit whatever you
like. All changes will appear in debian/patches/<new patch name>.dpatch after
you exit the shell. If you want to abort the changes, type 'exit 230'.
1.2 After some other patch
dpatch-edit-patch patch <new patch name> <existing patch name>
dpatch will extract a clean source tree, apply patches from
debian/patches/00list upto and including <existing patch name> and give you a
shell. All changes are preserved in debian/patches/<new patch name>. To abort
changes, `exit 230'
2. Dropping a patch
Just put a dash (#) in front of the patch name in debian/patches/00list and
dpatch won't apply it.
3. Modifying existing patch
dpatch-edit-patch <patch name>
dpatch will extract a clean source tree, apply patches up to and including
<patch name> and give you a shell. Change whatever you want and exit the
shell. Your changes are incorporated within <patch name>. To abort changes,
`exit 230'
