  FontForge notes and tips

- Recommended bearing (space on the sides of the glyphs):

    100 a 130
    130 o 130
    150 b 130
    150 U 150

    So stright full height (left B, left L, both U) have 150
    Straight but half height (right b, right a, left d) have 130
    No straight line (both v, left a, right c) have 100

- Shortcuts

    Ctrl+2 - Curve point  ( )
    Ctrl+3 - Corner point [ ]
    Ctrl+4 - Tangent point -->
    Cltr+Shift+> - goto glyph
    Ctrl+Shhift+_ - Round to int
    Ctrl+e - Find problems

- When creating straight lines

    Select 2 points
    Edit-Make line
    Ctrl+4

- When you create composed font, e.g. D + ˇ = Ď, sometimes width may be 
too small, "Ď" is ok, but when you create "Ǐ", it might be too narrow. 
You can't imediatelly move left/right bearings because they are locked
(small lock icon appears next to them). You must first unlock it:

  Edit->Unlock reference

- After this you might also need this:

  Element->Round->To int
  Element->Find problems

- Kerning. When you use Metrics->Auto kern, or Metrics->Kern pair closeup,
  it wont work. You have to do this:

    Element->Font info->Lookups->Gpos: 
     - If there are any previous attempts about kerning, erase them
     - Click button "Add lookup"
     - In combo "Type" choose "Pair position (kerning)"
     - In first column "Feature" click on white rectangle, then gray rectangle and choose "Horizontal kerning", type name, e.g. "kern"
     - Press "ok", dialog will dissapear
     - Press "add subtable", name it, choose "horizontal", then choose "pairs"
     - Click blue <new> and type "T" in first column, "e" in second, -350 in thrird column
     - Add other pairs as needed
     - Click ok, ok
     - File->Generate fonts, choose TTF

  Achieved kerning results:

     Gedit 2.30.3 - works
     Firefox >= 3.6 - works     
     Chrome 25 - works
     PHP GD - broken

  Osifont since 2014-03-10 contains 2 special kerning characters "Ȩȩ" (U+0228 U+0229). 
  They together form "Kon" if kerning is supported, or "Kno" if it is not supported.
  Firefox is currently the only browser that supports kerning.

- Ligatures: 

    1. Element->Font info->Lookups->GSUB->Add lookup
        Choose "Ligature substitution" in combo
        (this needs to be done only once, osifont has it since 2014-03-15)
        Name it "liga" as maximal name length is 4 characters.

    2. Encoding->Add encoding slots->1
       (New slot will be added to the very end, edit it)
    3. Element->Glyph info->Unicode->Glyph name
       (choose e.h. f_f_i for ffi ligature, I recomend using _ as separator as this will be autodetected later in step 5)
    4. Element->Glyph info->Unicode->OT Glyph Class
       (choose "Base lig")	
    5. Close this dialog by pressing "OK" and reopen it
       Element->Glyph info->Ligatures-> Click on blue <New Lig...>, choose "liga" table, "f f i" will be automatically added (if you used underscores in name)
       If you have ligature for non latin glyphs, use e.g. "uni023B uni023B"
    6. Element->Build->Composite font
       If you want to change shape, use Edit->Unlink reference or clear it and start from the scratch
    7. When you are done, close glyph and reopen it. On the left, at [0] position there is "Lig caret", use mouse and move it between 2 characters
       of glyph. Three glyph ligature like ffi would have 2 of those "Lig caret". Move one between ff and one between fi.

  Osifont since 2014-03-15 contains special ligature made of characters "Ȼȼ" (U+023B U+023C). 
  They together form ligature "Lon" if ligatures are supported, or "Kno" if they are not supported.
  Firefox is currently the only browser that supports ligatures.

- Fixing errors and cleaning up glyphs

    When new glyph is done or after you modify glyph, you can
    do certain tasks to make it more correct.

    1. entire glyph should be rounded to int. Usually it 
    already is, but sometimes it slips from int to float. Hit
    Ctrl+A to select all points, then Element->Round->Int
    or press Ctrl+Shift+_

    2. Make sure the outer outline of the font is clockwise and
    inner outline is counter clockwise. It it is not, select
    those olive colored points and change their orientation
    by Element->Clockwise or Element->Counter clockwise.

    3. Make sure font width is correct and it is centered correctly
    with just the right amount of space on the sides. This is 
    called "bearing" and correct values are mentioned above, but
    there is some room for adjustment, it is better to make it
    consistent among related glyphs than to blindliy obey some
    magic numbers.

    4. Run tool "Find problems" (Ctrl+E). In the dialog click 
    on "Set all" and on "BB" tab:

        - uncheck "Check advance" (because we have variable width font).
        - uncheck "Check BB above" (esp. for accented glyps because 
          they all taller than normal glyph)

    Then click "Ok", it should say "No problems found".
    Otherwise it will tell you what is 
    wrong and allow you to fix it. Some problems has to be fixed
    manually. Sometimes it is good to stop and "round to int"
    again and then continue in finding problems.

    Error: The hint does not control any points
    Solution: Run autohint again (Ctrl+Shift+H)

    Error: The glyps extend left further than desired
    Solution: Adjust bearing (step 3). Sometimes, this is
    not an error, see for example glyph Ħ (Hbar), the bar extends
    left and right, but capital letter is usually followed by
    small letter so it will not interfere.

    Error: The selected points are too close to each other.
    Solution: very often you just accidentaly clicked and added
    another point next to already existing point (sometimes
    there is one above other). Zoom in and move them a bit.
    You can merge them by Edit->Merge (Ctrl+M). Or do it by hand.

    ---------[]         []-------- delete it (del)

    --------------------()-------- move first point to second

    --------------------[]-------- restore correct point type (e.g. corner point in this case, Point->Corner (Ctrl+3))

    5. Run autohint (Ctrl+Shift+H), then run "Find problems" again.
    Sometimes hints are too close to point that are not related to that
    hint, this is generally not a problem and you can ignore it.

    6. Make sure tangent points are where they should be (e.g. 
    look at the top of the letter T). Convert those points to 
    tangent "Point->Tangent" (Ctrl+4). Usefull tools for this
    is sometimes selecting two points and "Point->Make line".
