There is the standard model and also an "xi" model which
stores more received faxes but does a lower maximum magnification
for copying and a lower maximum amount of copies.<p>
The best choice for printing is the "hpijs" driver
developed by HP.<p>
The best output one gets with HP's HPIJS 1.3 or newer. If you
cannot update to HPIJS 1.3 for some reason, you can also use HPIJS
1.2.2 with the patches from Matthias Bunte and Richard
Spencer-Smith ("hpijs-rss"). The Gimp-Print driver also
works (Model setting: "pcl-900"), but only up to 600
dpi.<p>
Scanning works using the <a
href="http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/">HPOJ</a>
low-level driver together with its <a
href="http://www.sane-project.org/">SANE</a>
backend "hpoj".<p>
In addition this device copies, faxes and prints photos directly
from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick, but these
functions are currently only controllable by the front panel, not
by the PC. To choose photos from your memory card, the machine
makes an index sheet with thumbnails of all photos and you can
mark which photos you want to print and how they should get
printed with a pen on the sheet and then you scan the sheet to
execute the printing job.<p>
Up/downloading of photos between the PC and the printer/memory
card works also with <a
href="http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/">HPOJ</a>.<p>
Even if you only want to print, you NEED to set up this printer
with <a
href="http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/">HPOJ</a> or
you have to use the modifed USB printer.c kernel module from the
<a
href="http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/">HPOJ</a>
web site.<p>
