README file for installing GMT from scratch (i.e., compiling the
source) under Windows. If you only want to install executables,
follow the gmt.soest.hawaii.edu link to our GMT Windows Installers.

INSTALLATION:
=============

To compile GMT for your Windows you must

1 Obtain precompiled netCDF files (netcdf.lib, netcdf.dll) and the
   netcdf.h include file from the netCDF home page.
2 Add HOME (your home directory, or C:\), GMTHOME (the top directory
   where you install GMT), and GMT_SHAREDIR (where you plan to store
   the run-time share files, typically %GMTHOME%\share) and modify
   PATH in the environmental parameters via the system settings so
   that %GMTHOME%\bin is included.

3 Also modify the entries for INCLUDE and LIB (create them if they
   do not exist) so they include the paths to the netCDF library
   netcdf.lib and the netCDF include file netcdf.h. These are used
   by the Microsoft (and other?) compilers and linkers to find these
   files.

4 Read the src\gmtinstall.bat and src\gmtsuppl.bat file instructions
   and make whatever modifications you need to (e.g., if you want to
   use static libraries or the optional TRIANGLE function.)

5  Run gmtinstall.bat followed by gmtsuppl.bat.

6. Note that these notes may get out of date; see the actual *.bat
   files for the latest settings.

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL:
====================

The complete GMT Documentation, including a Cookbook and Technical
Reference Manual, a Tutorial and Short Course Manual, all examples,
and UNIX man pages, all in HTML and PDF format are all included in
the archive. After installing, make a bookmark for the file

	GMT/share/doc/gmt/html/gmt_sevices.html.

To install the required GSHHG 2.3.0 coastlines, political borders, and
rivers you must obtain gshhg-gmt-2.3.0.tar.bz2 as well. Extract from
the directory that contains GMT.

To view your GMT PostScript or EPS plots, we recommend you install gsview
(see www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview). It is required to run the do_view script.
