The official sources for hintview are now on github:

https://github.com/ruckertm/HINT/tree/main/hintview/

There is always an OS specific directory (/Linux) and the common /backend directory.

to compile with GTK and the existing Makefile you set the WITH_GTK environment variable. So e.g.

cd Linux
WITH_GTK=2 make

Then the file chooser dialog will be compiled by GTK. Without GTK there is no such dialog but only the input file on the command line.
The user interface of the Linux version is very minimalistic. On the one hand it is a good starting point for own developments, on the other hand it is not very easy to use.
The key and mouse functions are described in a man page hintview.1.

I distinguish between the version for the viewer and the version for the HINT file version. I have just changed the output of the version, so that both versions are output. It now looks like this

./hintview --version
hintview version 1.3.1
HINT file format version 2.0
