\TYPE {close : (string -> void)}

\SYNOPSIS
Closes an {ML} port.

\KEYWORDS
file.

\DESCRIBE
The function {close} closes a port that had been opened for
reading (by {openi}) or writing (by {openw} or {append_openw}).
Ports are represented by the strings that are returned by one of the
functions {append-openw}, {openi} and {openw}.

\FAILURE
Fails when the named port is not open.
