Packaging policy for LTS and Feature releases
=============================================

Debian packages the current LTS release of Incus in unstable, which will then migrate
to testing and eventually become part of the next stable Debian release. Upstream
supports a LTS branch for five years, including security fixes. This aligns well with
Debian's development cycle and commitment to supporting packaged software.

Monthly feature releases of Incus are uploaded on a best-effort basis to experimental,
and _only_ to experimental. Upstream is very clear that each feature release is only
supported until the next feature release is made. A given feature release of Incus will
NEVER be uploaded to unstable, _except_ when a new LTS branch is created by upstream.

Versions of Incus in experimental will by definition be less well tested than the version
in unstable, though bug reports are always welcome.

incus-agent versions and static linking
=======================================

During amd64 and arm64 builds, multiple versions of incus-agent will be built. Notably,
a Windows version will be compiled to support incus-agent running in a Windows VM.

The incus-agent binary is compiled as a statically-linked executable. This is done
because if it is available on the host system, Incus will automatically copy the
incus-agent binary into new virtual machines that are created. Statically-linking
it will allow execution within any arbitrary Linux vm that a user may create.

This issue was encountered in the initial packaging of LXD for Debian, and the
Gentoo folks have also run into this: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752480
