Fri Apr 7 10:43:06 CEST 2006
Updating output format for "new" file checksums to match "removed".
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Oct 10 18:31:07 CEST 2005
Merged "digest" changes, switched to RipeMD160.
Bumped release to 4.0.
WARNING: 4.0 breaks db compatibility: both the current-state
checksums shown in the report and the file checksums
themselves are now in RipeMD160. README for details.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Oct 6 12:38:59 CEST 2005
Merged "stop_on_err" changes, doc fixes, cosmetic fixes.
Bumping release to 3.06 (interim release).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tue Sep 13 22:42:07 EST 2005
Update Makefile distready target to run autoconf, and include a record
of Chris Johns' changes below.
Update Makefile distclean target to remove autom4te.cache directory.
Updating version number to 3.05.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Sep 12 19:35:16 EST 2005
Applied patches from Yuri D'Elia:
- configure.in: Added some checks whether -static (or other flags)
can be used. Under at least OSX (and possibly open darwin) -static
cannot be used. This patch fix the build on those systems.
- elcwft.c: reorganized the walk loop. Ignored directories are now
_really_ ignored (that is, no more "cannot open directory").
- gnupg/md5.c: fixed broken macro for big endian systems under
certain compilers.
- other fixes: Assume checksums to be unsigned char as required by
gnupg/* (eliminates a dozen of warnings).
(See integrit-devel archives for original patch.)
Updating version number to 3.04.

Wed Mar 23 19:53:41 EST 2005
Patches from Chris Johns:
Remove the "filetype" change type, and replace it with a new "type"
inode change. So now integrit keeps the S_IFMT mode bits, in the same
way to the permission bits from the file mode, and hence any change to
file type gets flagged in the "stat" change type.
Add a new "devicetype" element in the "stat" change type, to detect when
a character or block special file changes major/minor number.
Finally, treat symbolic links similarly to regular files, in that integrit
computes an SHA-1 checksum for them, but not for the file contents, but
rather for the name in the symlink (using readlink()). Then, if a file
remains a symlink, but points to a different target, that's flagged as an
"SHA-1" change to the file.
Note that the database itself is not affected by this change, since it
contains a 'struct stat' and an SHA-1 checksum string already. The code
simply uses the existing database contents differently now.

Mon Oct 21 21:20:32 EDT 2002
Moved stdint.h.in installation below sizeof tests in configure.in.
Together with the removal of the aux directory from the CVS repository
on sourceforge, this change makes compilation on Windows smooth.
Updating minor version number to 3.03.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Wed Oct 2 20:19:01 EDT 2002
Added example of C program to run integrit on multiple config files:
examples/integrit-run.c

Sat Sep 28 10:18:03 EDT 2002
doc/Makefile.in had bang right after if, which Michael Schloh von
Bennewitz <michael@schloh.com> says was a probm on Solaris' bourne
shell. Now it uses $? instead.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sat Sep 7 15:50:37 EDT 2002
Using new autoconf large file support feature to turn on large file
support by default.
Corrected minor bug in output: "p(755:sym) " was reported as
"p(755:sym", resulting in odd looking human-readable report lines when
something changed to a symlink.
Updating minor version number to 3.02.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Jul 15 19:46:06 EDT 2002
Modifying doc installation process to acommodate debian (by not
running install-info on debian.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sat Jul 13 18:31:06 EDT 2002
Made i-ls accept multiple filenames and a usage option (-h). Made
i-ls show SHA-1 checksums by default.
Made i-viewdb show SHA-1 checksums by default.
Updating version number to 3.01.
Altering configure.in to accept empty values for some user-tunable
variables like CFLAGS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu May 16 00:05:42 EDT 2002
Made sure ar and ranlib were configure variables in Makefiles.
hashtbl's Makefile had hardcoded ar.
Included time.h in eachfile.c to avoid warning on debian woody.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sat Jan 5 11:29:38 EST 2002
adding support for building integrit in a directory other than the
source directory.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fri Dec 28 14:08:12 EST 2001
removing sync from build after getting confirmation from
comp.unix.programmer that it's not a good idea to sync after
building.
switching from options data type to a more general integrit_t data
type, which will carry program state, specifically exit status info.
now that dep.mak generation is done at distribution time instead of
build time, the split makefiles are no longer necessary. the foo.mak
makefiles have been merged into the Makefile's.
changing to cmp-style exit status: 0 for no change; 1 for changes
detected; 2 for error.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Dec 23 13:03:05 EST 2001
moving dep.mak generation from build time to release time.
"make clean" now cleans in utils and hashtbl too.
changing "-I foo" to "-Ifoo" and "-L foo" to "-Lfoo" for compatibility
with weird platforms.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tue Dec 11 21:40:28 EST 2001
made changes based on patch from David Doubrava to help with HP-UX and
SCO compatibility.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Dec 10 22:05:36 EST 2001
added ".info" extension to the info file on Jos Backus' suggestion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Oct 22 00:24:32 EST 2001
changed the "aux" directory to "utils" as an accomodation to the
DOS-isms that persist even in Windows 2000.
changed the "utilities" files to the more descriptive name,
"hexprint".
added a AC_CHECK_HEADERS(stdint.h inttypes.h) in addition to the
individual AC_CHECK_HEADER checks for those headers in configure.in.
This change makes the stdint.h and inttypes.h information make its way
into the config.h file more consistently.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Oct 14 16:44:37 EDT 2001
added a test suite and bug-report generator in the new "test"
directory.
added a new make target, "make test".
These facilities are not yet documented, but should help in
collaborative debugging.
Raised version number to 2.04.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Oct 1 18:24:50 EDT 2001
got rid of a hard-coded path to test in hashtbl/configure. I had to
manually remove the configure script before autoreconf would
regenerate it.
made configure substitute the compiler into the base and hashtbl
makefiles.
got rid of old aux/configure script.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tue Sep 11 19:33:56 EDT 2001
install-info isn't guaranteed to work on "make install", e.g., it
might not be in the $PATH. Now instead of halting the build, the
doc/Makefile generates a warning when it can't do install-info.
Also a note about the issue was added to INSTALL.

Mon Sep 10 18:44:00 EDT 2001
Robert Weber, Siemens Business Services, eMail:
Robert.Weber@mch.sbs.de reported a bug in eachfile.c, where integrit
was ingnoring read errors and, worse, passing -1 to sha_write. The
bug was obscure because the read usually worked, but integrit was
dumping core on RW's Solaris 7 system.
Thanks Robert Weber! This bug has been fixed.
Added FAQ to documentation and updated texinfo docs in general.
Raised version number to 2.03.
Made changes to documentation and to root.conf based on suggestions by
matt <matt@cipherdesign.com>. The changes make integrit's file tree
walking easier to understand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Jul 30 22:16:51 EDT 2001
Making elcwft more flexible by way of a "context" type.
Tried letting integrit skip over directories it can't open instead of
treating it as fatal. This causes complications of an optimization
where integrit only stores checksums for files it can read. During a
check run integrit assumes a file wasn't a regular file at the time of
the update if it doesn't have a checksum in the database.
This wouldn't be such a great feature anyway because integrit should
be running as root looking at system files or configured to skip
directories the user can't see.
KISS!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Jul 26 00:17:17 EDT 2001
Adding texinfo documentation as the beginning of a transition away
from roff docs to texinfo.
Took out funky test-program-finding shenanigans in configure process.
Raised version number to 2.02
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Wed Jul 4 18:54:00 EDT 2001
Changed hashtbl to config.h-based configuration.
Updated version number to 2.01.
Got rid of the unused packint.c file.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Jul 2 21:52:37 EDT 2001
Make clean targets should clean up better after Andras Bali pointed
out some missed files.
The configure process now looks for the test program so that the
configure script will work properly on Solaris, where "test -r
filename" fails incorrectly sometimes.
Included a stdint.h.in file that can replace stdint.h on non-C99-
conforming platforms that lack a stdint.h or inttypes.h system header.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Jun 18 18:39:01 EDT 2001
Added feature: you can change the maximum file size that will be
mmap'ed with a configure option. Specifying a maximum of zero means
that mmap won't be used. You can conserve virtual memory this way.
Added feature: non-inherited checksets.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Jun 17 17:40:43 EDT 2001
Using stdio's fwrite for buffered output in cdb_make stuff.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sat Jun 16 13:57:16 EDT 2001
Added feature: build process now includes more sophisticated
dependency juggling.
This is most noticed with headers, e.g., after building everything, if
you change cdb_seq.h and run "make aux", then the files depending on
that header will be rebuilt: missing.o; cdb_seq.o; viewdb.o; and
viewdb. :)
Some unneeded complexity has been removed from the build process: aux
no longer has its own configure script.
The object files that are shared between integrit itself and the
auxiliary programs is now in a library, "libintegrit.a".
Added configure option for specifying install script to use if
autoconf finds one that doesn't really work (e.g., Stata's "install"
program was in my path once). Updated hashtbl's "make install"
stuff to use install.
Added feature: now known and current databases can be specified on the
command line, overriding the settings in the configuration file. This
feature is for sysadmins who want to use the same configuration file
on many similar hosts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fri Jun 15 20:38:18 EDT 2001
The hashtbl library has two related new features: a "foreach" feature,
where a callback can be executed on each element in the hash table,
and an optional "destroy item" callback.
The callback for destroying items allows the caller to store complex
data structures in the hash table and then pass a pointer to a
specialized cleanup routine to hashtbl_free.
Auxiliary tools now build properly with leak detection turned on.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Jun 14 13:45:58 EDT 2001
Big changes: removed cdb-0.75 from integrit. integrit now uses its
own cdb routines and some modified versions of DJB's public domain
sources.
integrit's use of openssl has been removed. integrit now uses md5 and
sha1 checksums adapted from those of gnupg-1.0.6.
Memory-leak finding support has been added to the auxiliary tools.
Miscellaneous cleaning up.
Changing major version number to two.
New feature: using -q and -v flags to change verbosity level does
something now: lowering the level with "-q" eliminates the preamble in
the human-readable report.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Wed Feb 21 22:43:59 EST 2001
Eliminated race condition pointed out by lumpy@9mm.com: file could
change from regular file to non-regular file between lstat and open.
Made file tree walker more robust in that it silently ignores files
that disappear between the readdir call and the lstat call.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mon Feb 19 12:59:18 EST 2001
Split file stat & checksum info for missing files onto two lines, to
be consistent with the rest of the output and to make the output more
readable (less wide).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Feb 18 13:15:59 EST 2001
Big bugfix: byte order issues were making cdb_seq routines fail on big
endian architectures (Sparc was the one tested). By using cdb's
uint32_unpack when reading in numbers from the cdb file, the
byte-order works out correctly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Feb 18 03:22:14 EST 2001
Adding file stat and checksum information for missing files to
human-readable output.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Feb 18 01:55:48 EST 2001
Making short reads in cdb_seq_get and cdb_seq_getkey an error.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Feb 18 01:13:32 EST 2001
Reporting permissions of symlinks as "sym" instead of "777".
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tue Feb 13 00:42:18 EST 2001
adding rpm support. Gyepi SAM <gyepi@peanutpress.com> is the rpm
packager.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Wed Feb 7 22:59:10 EST 2001
incrementing minor version number. Now it's v.1.06.
when reporting new files, information about the new files is
included.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sat Jan 20 12:28:43 EST 2001
changing conditionally compiled stuff from platform-oriented to more
specific, feature-oriented criteria, capitalizing on
autoconf-generated info.
e.g., prefer "#if HAVE_STDINT_H"
to "#if ! defined(__FreeBSD__) && ! defined(__sun)".
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Wed Jan 17 21:28:40 EST 2001
releasing 1.05.02-beta
With the help of Jos Backus, improving the portability of integrit to
the Solaris platform.
Release files are now signed with my public key.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fri Jan 12 19:45:30 EST 2001
In anticipation of a stable release, binaries are stripped on
installation when the package is configured without the --enable-debug
option.
Documentation has been updated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Jan 11 00:10:55 EST 2001
New auxiliary program: i-ls.
Improved install build process has better make logic and uses BSD
install instead of cp.
changing version number to 1.05
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Dec 31 17:47:42 EST 2000
Finally made hashtbl into a standalone library.
This cleans up dependencies and makes hashtbl useful to users outside
the context of integrit.
changing version number to 1.04
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Dec 28 14:06:53 EST 2000
new program: i-viewdb (in the aux directory) can be used to view
integrit databases.
changing version number to 1.03
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thu Dec 21 13:49:00 EST 2000
big bugfix: strcpy in options.c's do_rule was the reason for dmalloc
and Boehm gc's complaints about smashed objects
changed to memcpy :) Let's hear it for memory debuggers
plus C!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tue Dec 19 17:20:29 EST 2000
some of the changes for version 1.02:
-- debugging and memory leak checking have become configure
options
-- bugfixes
-- comprehensive human-readable format documented in manpage
