IPTOTAL (Dec 17, 2001)
==========================

Contents
========
iptotal is yet another IP traffic monitor. It listens to a network interface in
non-promiscuous mode, and measures IP bandwidth usage. After the specified
number of seconds, the average throughput is printed at total, input and output
usage.

Suggested Usage
===============
The utility can be used to measure bandwidth usage without the need for an SNMP
daemon. Such a daemon is sometimes not wanted for security reasons or simply not
available for the machine to be measured.
In combination with a simple script and MRTG or rrdtool it can be used to
present the measured data in graphical format e.g. through a web interface.
The package contains www + CGI sample files for FREESCO http://www.freesco.org

Installing
==========
See INSTALL

Documentation
=============
Use iptotal -h to get a list of available options

Bugs/Todo
=========
Underlying interface is assumed to be Ethernet with IP datagram offset of 14
octets. In non-promiscuous mode and no data is being received/transmitted via
the interface under measurement, then the measurement interval is not
guaranteed, because the measurement is a blocking call.

Requirements
============
IPTOTAL uses the pcap library which is available from the
URL http://www.tcpdump.org.
This library is installed by default in some Unix environments, and it available
as an rpm from Red Hat.
The package contains some sample measurement + CGI script for Tobi Oetiker's
rrtool (see URL http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool) to create
graphs on the fly. A sample result page can be seen at my server at URL
http://dingetje.homeip.net/iptotal/iptotal.cgi
