THE FLAT Demo - 1991 / 1998-2000
================================

The Flat was originally a DC-World game, a joint project with my brother,
before I was familiar enough with PC programming to develop my own engine.

When IRE began to take shape, The Flat has been re-made to test the game engine.
The Flat has shipped as the IRE demo world with all versions of the engine
since 0.4, and will probably continue to be shipped in the future.

The re-make is not as complete as the original, and is not presently being
developed much further, other than to keep it working as the engine evolves.

All creative development is currently being put into the False Messiah project.

More information about The Flat can be found at :

http://ire.sourceforge.net/modules/flat.htm

The Story
---------

You are Larry Smith , head of a large chain of flats called Luxulux Flats LTD.

Occasionally, you decide to rent an appartment in your largest flat under a
false name, just to see how well they are run, and generally to escape from
the trials of everyday life, or in other words, have a holiday.
Last night, you went to a pub, and after a few beers, you got completely
drunk.

When you awoke, you found that you were back in your appartment, and looking
around, you find that the secretary went berserk and you are impossibly near
bankruptcy.

You must go and recover your lost wealth somehow , anyhow, as long as it's
legal!

But , of course, it's no walkover , and you should keep clear of the taxmen,
as you cannot pay them!

Also, other people will try and prevent you from regaining your lost riches.
Some of them should be locked up.
Either in jail , or a padded cell.

Playing the Game
----------------

The interface is based on the one from Ultima VI, but with
improved mouse support (more point-and-click than U6 was).

You can either use the arrow keys to move, or right-click with
the mouse on the game window.

To do things, you have a list of commands at the bottom-right
corner of the screen. You can click on these with the mouse,
or press the first letter on the keyboard.

To open doors, you'll want to USE them. Once you click on USE,
a direction cursor will appear. You must then select the direction
of the object to use, either with the arrow keys or by clicking with
the mouse.

If you press F1, you'll see a list of keys which should be useful.

For more details, look at the IRE documentation.

Reporting Bugs
--------------

If you want to report something, read the trouble.txt file first.
Then try the mailing list.. see the contact info at the end.

Copyright and License
---------------------

The Flat is copyright (C) 2003 J. P. Morris, IT-HE Software.

It is freeware. You can copy and use it as much as you want, but please,
please try to keep the thing intact. If you want to re-distribute it in a
modified form, e.g. for a Linux distribution, I'd appreciate being asked
first (it may even make the job easier :-).

The Flat uses the IRE engine from IT-HE Software. If you want to try
recompiling the game, get the source code from http://ire.sf.net
You'll need version 0.90 or above. IRE is BSD licensed.

I'm not too keen on people ripping the artwork or music. I would prefer to be
asked if you want to use them.
