The Isenkram project
====================

This is a simple system to propose to the logged in user any Debian
packages that would be useful to support a given given piece of
inserted hardware.

The name is old facened Norwegian, where it mean metal tool like
hammers, saws, nails, screws, etc, or a shop where such stuff is sold.
It is similar to the German word eisenkram.

The isenkram package install its autostart rule in the
/etc/xdg/autostart/ directory, and the daemon handling hardware
detection should start automatically when a user log if using any XDG
compatible desktop environment.

Announcing supported hardware using Appstream
---------------------------------------------

Packages in Debian can announce the hardware they support using the
Appstream metainfo XML format, see
https://wiki.debian.org/AppStream/Guidelines#Announcing_supported_hardware
for a recipe on how to do this.

Lintian detect packages with udev hardware rules which lack appstream
modalias provides. These should be patched to announce their
supported hardware using the Appstream format. See
https://udd.debian.org/lintian-tag.cgi?tag=appstream-metadata-missing-modalias-provide
for the list of packages triggering this lintian warning.

Several packages already have a BTS report with patch waiting for the
maintainer to incorporate the improvement. A list of such packages
can be found on
https://udd.debian.org/cgi-bin/bts-usertags.cgi?user=pere%40hungry.com&tag=appstream-modalias .
