Debugging Support</A>

The generated code is organised in such a way that a symbolic debugger will be a useful
tool for exploring data structures.
Furthermore, by default the code is instrumented with <I>assert</I><A NAME="1438"> </A> statements
that check e.g. for references through nil pointers.
In the same way as the Unix <I>assert</I>, compiling with -DNDEBUG<A NAME="967"> </A><A NAME="968"> </A> effectively
deletes the asserts from the code.
(There are other macros whose redefinition can influence the behaviour of <I>assert</I>.)
<P>
A typical run time error message is `no default action defined'.
This occurs when a <I>with-</I> or <I>foreach-with-statement</I> does not cover all cases,
as explained in Section <A HREF="node11.html#func-def">1.5</A>.
One of the situations in which this can occur is when such a statement is applied
to an argument of the wrong phylum.
Running <I>lint</I> should have uncovered this, see Section <A HREF="node25.html#sec:lint">3.3</A>.
