KTranslator
KTranslator is a rewrite of KTradutor (http://ktradutor.sourceforge.net), a English to Brazilian Portuguese translation application.
KTradutor is a Brazilian Portuguese only program. So, a new rewrite was necessary to support other languages. KTranslator will support any language (I hope that) and come with a plugin system, to ease the addition of new dictionaries.
The main idea behind KTranslator is to translate a word without disturb the application in use.
So, when the user selects a word, KTranslator will try to translate the word and show the result in a popup window. It behaves like Babylon for Windows.
In the first time you run KTranslator, the program will ask you for a dictionary. A dialog will appear to add the dictionary. Choose one name for the dictionary. This can be anything and will be used in popup window to identify the dictonary.
Next, choose a dictionary file. This file can be a Freedict dictionary file, as distributed with the program. This dictionaries are converted from TEI file in the Freedict project (http://www.freedict.org) to a plain text format that KTranslator understands. If you want to use one of these dictionaries, choose the Freedict plugin.
The file can be Babylon dictionaries too. Only the .dic files are supported, not the new .bgl files. Note that Babylon dictionaries are actually 2 files, english.dic and engtoXXX.dic (the XXX is some language). You have to choose the engtoXXX.dic, place the english.dic in the same directory that the other file and choose Babylon plugin.
Another plugin is PlainText. This is the same format used by Freedict plugin above. The difference is you can change the dictionary file (i.e. adding new entries) with PlainText while the KTranslator is running. With Freedict plugin you cannot, but the search with Freedict plugin is more faster (~1ms in my tests).
DICT files can be used by plugin Dictd. This plugin reads dictionaries in DICT format. You can get one of these dictionaries in DICT website (http://www.dict.org) or FreeDict website (http://www.freedict.org). If you choose to use one of these dictionaries, select the .index file, put the other file (.dict or .dict.dz) in the same directory and chooses Dictd plugin.
KTranslator can use Sdictionary and StarDict dictionaries too. These dictionaries can be found in http://sdict.com/en/ and http://stardict.sourceforge.net. The former uses only on file, so select this file. The later uses three files. You should put all files in the same directory and select the .ifo file.
Now that you configure one dictionary, a icon in system tray will appear and you can translates some words. To translate a word, you can select the word while pressing <control>. Doing this, a popup window will appear with the translation.
There are other way to translate. With you click with the Right Mouse Button in a word while pressing <control>, the program will try to read the word through a OCR program (GOCR - http://jocr.sourceforge.net/) and the popup will appear. You have to install the GOCR. I have to say that OCR is highly experimental. Several times it will not understand the word. Sometimes, it not works at all.
