About French Language
=====================

The content of French dot-files are written by Nicolas Sabouret.

About dot-files in the "fr" directory
=====================================

dot.Xresources
        New settings for Xterm the character set.
        Using iso10646 (upward compatible with iso8859) allows to:
        - use Xterm in UTF-8 mode (xterm -ux 8),
        - use doublewidth characters in UTF-8 mode Xterm.

dot.bash_profile
        Activates french preferences for console and other programs
        when bash is invoked, at login only.
        However, when opening a new shell, the LANG variable will
	be already set to french (since the user will be logged in).
	As a consequence, there is no need for a dot.bashrc file.

dot.cshrc
        Activates french preferences for console and other programs
        when csh is invoked (at login or in a shell).

dot.profile
        Activates french preferences for console and other programs
        when ash or ksh is invoked, at login only.
	It is sufficient to have the LANG variable correctly set,
	like we explained for bash_profile.

dot.tcshrc
        Activates french preferences for console and other programs
        when tcsh is invoked (at login or in a shell).

dot.zshenv
        Activates french preferences for console and other programs.
        It is called when zsh is invoked (at login or in a shell).

Things that were suggested but that I decided NOT to do for the "fr" directory
==============================================================================

1. make a "dot.inputrc" file for "set convert-meta off".
        I couldn't find a situation in which it was needed.
        However, I tried it and I didn't notice any problem (especially
        with the meta key).

2. make a "dot.emacs"
        Current versions of emacs support european languages,
        throught MULE.

3. make a "dot.gnome.slash.gdm" to change the language when loggin from gdm.
        The "language" option in the greeter should be used instead.
        task-french provides a documentation on how to do this.
