Accessing local and remote file systems

  11.. PPuurrppoossee

At boot time, _L_i_n_u_x reads the file /etc/fstab. This file describes all
partitions and network volumes the system will access. This file
  defines the following relations:

+o Where do we find the resource?

  +o Where does it go?

  +o What type is it?

  +o Which options apply?

The current menu answers the first three questions above, and may also
include the size of the partition. When the partition is of type _D_O_S,
the _D_O_S drive letter is appended as a reference.

  22.. NNoottiiccee

Understand that the operation you are about to do only defines the
mapping between resources (hard drive partitions or network volumes)
  and your local filesystem tree.

Removing a line from this menu does not affect the data at all. On the
other hand, if you remove a line and you reboot, you will find an
empty directory where you used to find the data of the resource. The
data is still there, but the connection is not.
