La fonction
.B _exit
met fin "immdiatement" au processus en cours, les descripteurs de
fichiers lui appartenant sont ferms, tous ses fils
ventuels sont hrits par le processus 1 (init),
et son pre reoit un signal
.B SIGCHLD.

L'appel-systme
.B _exit
n'appelle aucune fonction programme par la routine
ANSI C
.BR atexit (3),
ni aucun gestionnaire de signal. Le fait qu'elle vide ou non les
buffers d'entre-sortie, ou qu'elle efface les fichiers temporaires crs avec
.BR tmpfile (3)
dpend de l'implmentation.
En revanche,
.B _exit
ferme les descripteurs de fichiers, ce qui peut retarder son excution durant
le temps o des critures se terminent. Si ce retard est gnant, on peut
invoquer \fItcflush()\fP avant
d'appeler \fB_exit()\fP.
Savoir si certaines entres/sorties en attente sont annules lors d'un
\fB_exit()\fP, et lesquelles, dpend de l'implmentation.
