O argumento

indica uma mensagem padro a ser retornada se o catlogo no estiver
disponvel. O texto fica num buffer interno, e deve ser copiado pelo aplicativo
se se desejar grav-lo ou modific-lo. A string retornada sempre terminada
em null.

Estas funes s existem no libc.so.4.4.4c e posteriores. O
X/Open Portability Guide de janeiro de 1987 define uma mensagem de erro
mais sutil: ser retornado

se o catlogo no estiver disponvel, e uma string vazia se o catlogo
estiver disponvel mas no contiver a mensagem especificada.
Estas dois erros no so diferenciados pelo XPG4.2, que sempre retorna
