NOTE:
This is a modified version of MAPLAY, an MPEG-1 layer I and II audio
player for many UNIX variants.
The Linux-specific part of this version has been modified so that it
will work on slower computers. To be specific, the original MAPLAY
requires a Pentium-60 MHz or similar machine in order to have good
performance (on slower machines the sound gets choppy).
This version works acceptably on 486DX2 machines; in general the CPU
load ranges from 35% (for 32-kbps, 32-kHz MPEG mono layer II files) to
about 95% (for 96-kbps, 44.1-kHz mono layer II files). The load will
go up with higher bitrates or stereo.
I've not tested this player with higher-bitrate files, but I'm pretty
sure that the sound quality will be degraded for these. Anyway, I have
a 486DX2 and I figured out I'd be happy with limited functionality (in
this case, lower-bitrate files) rather than no functionality at all,
as the normal MAPLAY is unusable on 486DX2's and lesser machines.
Enjoy!
