<h3 class="section">13.2 Files</h3>
<p>A file is simply an area on a particular storage device which contains data
or text. Files on the disks are figuratively grouped into "directories".
A directory is just a list of files. Commands which deal with files are:

<p>When a file name is passed to functions like <code><a href="maxima_68.html#plot2d">plot2d</a></code>,<!-- /@w -->
<code><a href="maxima_75.html#save">save</a></code>, or <code><a href="maxima_75.html#writefile">writefile</a></code> and the file name does not include a path,
Maxima stores the file in the current working directory. The current working
directory depends on the system like Windows or Linux and on the installation.
