<STRONG>UPDATED 9 OCTOBER 1999</STRONG>
<P>
The book
<EM>MH &amp; xmh: Email for Users &amp; Programmers</EM>,
ISBN 1-56592-093-7, written by Jerry Peek, was published by and is
copyright &copy; 1991, 1992, 1995 by O'Reilly &amp; Associates, Inc.
In June, 1996, ORA made the book freely available under the terms of the
GNU General Public License; please read the
<A HREF="copying.htm">information about copying and distribution</A>.
<P>
This is the fourth updated online edition.
It originally came from the book's third print edition.
The title is "MH &amp; nmh" instead of "MH &amp; xmh."
But the book still covers MH, <I>xmh</I>, <I>exmh</I> and mh-e --
as well as the new version of MH called nmh.
<P>
The most up-to-date copy of this book is at
<A HREF="http://www.ics.uci.edu/~mh/book/">
<EM>http://www.ics.uci.edu/~mh/book/</EM></A>.
If you'll use the book often, check the
<A HREF="servers.htm">list of servers</A>...
maybe bookmark a second server in case one's down.
<P>
I update the online Web version as often as I can -- including minor
problems that readers spot.
Here's <A HREF="whatsnew.htm">what's new</A>:
<A HREF="updates.htm">updates</A> and new features.
And some other notes:

<LI>
If you have a browser that understands frames,
you'll probably want to read the
<A HREF="frm-help.htm">help page for the frames interface</A>,
then click if you want to
<A HREF="frm-home.htm">open the frames interface</A>.
<LI>
<!-- First [ ] should be near left margin, just after LI, so it won't break. -->
If this <TT>[ ]</TT> doesn't look like this <TT>[&nbsp;]</TT>
(a space between two brackets), your browser will have
some problems with these files.
Read the <A HREF="browhelp.htm">browsing help page</A>.
<LI>
If you have a really slow connection, you might want copies of the
book files to install on your local computer.
Read the <A HREF="browhelp.htm">browsing help page</A>.
<LI>
There's a printable PostScript version of the book available for downloading at
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.gw.com/pub/people/jpeek/mh/book-ps/">
ftp://ftp.gw.com/pub/people/jpeek/mh/book-ps/</A>.
It's not updated as often as these Web pages.
</UL>
This book covers MH, nmh, and several interfaces to them.
The <A HREF="roadmap.htm">Road Map</A> is a good place to start.
If you're using frames, you've got an index search box and a listing of
the main table of contents.
Non-frames users: if your server or system is set up to do it, you can
<A HREF="/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/mh/mh-index">search the index</A> (NOTE: it's
an unusual <I>egrep</I> search; here are <A HREF="srchhelp.htm">tips</A>)
or see the <A HREF="toc.htm">complete table of contents</A>.
The book has five main sections:
<UL>
<LI>
<A HREF="overall/index.htm">Overall information</A> for users of MH, nmh,
and all their interfaces.
For example, this introduces those packages and has an overview of MIME.

<A HREF="mh/index.htm">MH</A> starts with basic MH and nmh usage,
then covers customization.
(Here are links to MH info helpful for users of
<A HREF="xmh/tocs/xmh.htm">xmh</A> and
<A HREF="exmh/tocs/exmh.htm">exmh</A>.
Sorry, no mh-e links yet.)
