************ README file for MiXViews version 1.07 ************

Important notes for users of this software:

For all users:

In order to get MiXViews to look for its resource file in
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults, you need to add a line to your .login or .cshrc
file:

setenv XAPPLRESDIR /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults

This is a workaround for a small bug in the X toolkit I use (InterViews).
If you have InterViews 3.2, you will not need this fix.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New features in MXV v. 1.07

1) Little- and Big-endian files supported for all sound file types.
2) File text comments supported for LPC, FFT, Envelope, and Sound types.
3) Memory limits may be set as options to avoid bogging down machines.
4) Rudimentary .mxvrc defaults file implemented.
5) Greatly improved pitch-tracking using bandpass filter.

New features in MXV v. 1.06

1) The following sound formats can now be read and written: IRCAM, SND/AU,
Hybrid (CMIX), AIF-C, WAVE, and raw (headerless).
2) Sample format may now be 8 or 16 bit linear and well as float and mulaw.
3) Skip and duration times for files to be read may now be specified either on
the command line or in the Open panel.
4) Arbitrary byte inskip may be specified for raw file reads.
5) LittleEndian files (e.g., .WAV) can be read on bigendian systems.
6) Phase vocoder resynthesis is now available.
7) Automatic rescaling is done when pasting between incompatible data types.
8) Dialog panels can be set to ignore the Window Manager (this keeps them from
accidentally being iconified or hidden while popped up).
9) A rudimentary form of SMPTE frame display is now an option for the
    horizontal scales.
10) Sound playback and recording now supports the VoxWare software for the Linux
    platform.
11) Insert point and edit regions now set to exact values when entered via
    dialog.
12) Some value-entry items now use sliders for ease of entry and bounds control.
This will be expanded further in the next major release.

New features in MXV v. 1.05

1) Better support for raw (headerless) data reading for all data types.
2) Failed open commands no longer open a blank window.
3) An ASCII dump of LPC , PVOC, and FFT data files can now be done.
4) A new datafile of type Sound, LPCData, or Envelope can be created via menu
     from any window.

Bugs and missing features from MiXViews v1.06

On Linux platform:

1) WAVE format soundfiles are not correctly written out if in U-law format
(8-bit and 16-bit formats work fine).

On SGI platform:

1) Though aiff and aifc files can be read in, only uncompressed aifc files
may be written back out (if writing out an AIF/C file).

2) The record level is not accurate at the low end (0 - 10 out of 100).
Use the SGI apanel for exact levels. (Play levels are accurate, though).

3) MiXView will "take over" the converter if it is started up at a time when
no other person is using the hardware. It will interrupt other 'play'
processes and reset the converter values.

On NeXT platform:

1) The record level control does nothing (i.e., cannot be set).

On Sparc platform:

1) Pops and clicks during conversion of 16-bit sounds on SPARC 10's, LX's, and
20's is a Sun hardware bug (call Sun up and complain!).

2) See the README.sparc file for information about Sun audio software
    problems and fixes.

On all platforms:

1) The quit sequence is awkward when there are unsaved files (asks for
quit confirmation, and then still asks about each unsaved file).

2) No global "undo" command is available for editing.

3) When changing name of model, additional views of same model do not get
	their names updated.

4)	MXV can now read pvoc files generated by the Csound phase vocoder, but does
not do the proper shifting of the nyquist value to allow resynthesis. Email
	me for a workaround.

5) If multiple files are given on the command line, and any of them causes
mxv to pop up a panel (e.g., a bad header or mismatched values), mxv will
refuse to accept input when the windows are mapped. Workaround: open
	them individually from within mxv.

6) If a file's name is changed to the name of an existing file, a warning will
be given at that time, but future save operations will not ask for
	confirmation.
