depmod, modprobe -- kernel module administration utilities
********************************************************************************
Depmod - is used for creating symbol dependences between stacked
(or better interdependent) modules.
Modprobe - is the corresponding loading frontend, which uses the information
created by depmod.
Those are the depmod and modprobe programs for the *new* modutils used by the
Linux-2.1.18 and above kernels. This is a complete rewrite of the corresponding
programs found formerly in the packages called modules-2.x.x. There is no
support for the older kernels! therefore You will need FIRST to install at least the
headers for the new kernel, before compiling those programs.
The main advantages over the former programs called the same are:
1. Use C instead of C++.
2. All comments are in english, altough my english is not-quite
perfect kind.
3. No reentrancy problems with string allocation.
4. Don't fold them into one executable.
This facilitates arbitrary renaming of the executables.
5. No arbitrary limits.
6. Supposedly far more secure in usage. During the study of the originals
I found at least ONE BIG BACK HOLE similiar to the problems formerly
found with the mount programm, which made it possible for *every* local
user to gain root privileges. I'm not going to tell You where exactly...
