Debian on the HP Media Vault mv2120
===================================

This package includes a number of utilities and init scripts for the
HP mv2120.

Supported Systems
-----------------

All Media Vault generation 2 devices are supported. This includes the
HP mv2120 and the mv5100 series. These devices are the same and only
differ in their disk configuration. The mv2120 has a single 500 GB
drive, the mv5140 has two 500 GB drives and the mv5150 has a pair of
750 GB drives.

The Media Vault generation 1 devices (mv2010, mv2020, and mv2040) are
not supported.

The Boot Process
----------------

The health LED is used to signal the status of the boot process. Here
is a list of stages and the corresponding signals the boot process will
go through:

 - Blue, blinking quickly: the mv2120 is starting up and is loading the
boot image from disk. This stage takes about 2 minutes.
 - The SATA light goes on, the health light continues to blink quickly:
the Linux kernel has been loaded.
 - Blue, blinking slowly: the initramfs has been loaded and is now
   trying to mount your disk.
 - Solid purple: your root partition has been mounted and the boot
process will continue from disk. If this stage takes a long time,
the system might be checking your disks.
 - Solid blue: the boot process has been completed and you can log in
   via SSH.

Recovery mode
-------------

The HP mv2120 has a recovery mode through which it can request a boot
image over the local network. You can generate a recovery image for
your installed Debian kernel with the mv2120-recovery-image tool.

You can serve the generated recovery image to your HP mv2120 via the
network with a HP supplied tool on Windows or with uphpmvault on Debian
and other systems. You can put your HP mv2120 into recovery mode by
following these steps: hold the reset button down, then press the power
button and keep both buttons pressed for about 5 seconds. Your HP mv2120
will now request a recovery image via your local network.
