.SH DESCRIPTION
\fIslspades\fP is the client portion of a 4-player networked spades game. In order to play, you must also have a server,
.B spadesd(6)\fR,
running, either on the local machine or on a remote machine. Once the server is running, it just takes 4 people to register, and then a game is started.
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
.B \-V
Print version and exit
.TP
.B \-o
Play offline (non-networked).
.TP
.BI \-n\ name
name is an eight character string used to identify you to the other players. If you do not specify your name on the command-line, you will be prompted for it.
.TP
.BI \-s\ server
server is the hostname on which the spades server is running. This overrides any
.B SPADES_SERVER
environment variable. If you do not specify the server, you will be prompted for it.
.TP
.BI \-p\ main-port
main-port is the port number on which \fIslspades\fP will look for the spades server. If this value is not specified, the default value of 7626 will be used.
.TP
.BI \-t\ taunt-port
taunt-port is the port number on which \fIslspades\fP will look for the TauntServer(tm). If this value is not specified, the default value of 7626 will be used.
.SH ENVIRONMENT
.IP "SPADES_SERVER"
The hostname of the machine running the spades server. If not set, you must specify in the connection dialog box. Overridden with the -s option.
.SH "PLAYING SLSPADES"
A description of the game of spades is beyond the scope of this documentation. Please see the Appendix A of the README file distributed with \fIslspades\fP. If you already know how to play spades, read on.
.SS "BIDDING"
When the game prompts you, enter your bid of how many tricks you think you personally will take with your hand. Valid bids are 0-13 and nil (Bid nil by entering n at the prompt), however, your team must also satisfy the minimum bid of three.
.SS "PLAYING A CARD"
Play a card by typing the single letter from a-m which appears below the card you wish to play. You do
.B not
need to press Enter after pressing a key.
.SS "TAUNTING"
You may send a message to the other players in the game by using the taunt mechanism. At (almost) any point in the game, press the Escape key, and you will be presented with the TauntBox. Enter your one-line taunt and press Enter. The taunt will then be displayed on the screens of all players, attributed to you (sorry, no anonymous taunting). You can taunt while contemplating your bid or during card play, but not while entering the bid. Once you have started entering a bid, you must complete it before entering your next taunt.
.SH BUGS
None known.
