What is nwrite?
---------------
nwrite is a replacement for the standard UNIX write(1) program that lets you
write directly to the terminal of another logged-in user without the overhead
of talk taking over the full screen or the other user having to respond first.

Advantages of nwrite over traditional versions of write:
 - ability to send same message simaltaneously to multiple users
 - receiver-configurable message format, including a tag at the start of
each line that identifies the sender

A typical two-way nwrite conversation might look something like this:
	% nwrite marco
	writing to marco on ttype
hey marco, have you seen roy around?
Message from marco on ttype to alanc at 13:27:37 ...
	marco> not today
marco> last I saw him he was sleeping under the computers again
	okay, thanks
	^D
	marco> no problem
	EOF (marco)

Installing nwrite
-----------------
nwrite is fairly simple & straightforward to build and install on most
flavors of UNIX. So far, people have successfully done so on:
	Apollo Domain/OS 10.4
	DEC Ultrix 4.4
	Digital UNIX 3.2, 4.0
	FreeBSD 2.2.2-Release, 2.2.5-Stable, 2.2.6-Stable
	HP/UX 9.05, 10.20
	IBM AIX 3.2.5
	NetBSD
	Sequent Dynix 3.x (BSD 4.2-ish)
	Sequent Dynix/PTX 4.0.1 (SysVr4-ish)
	SGI Irix 6.2
	Sun Solaris 2.4, 2.5, 2.5.1, 2.6 (SPARC & x86)

See the file "INSTALL" for instructions on building nwrite.

Future Versions of nwrite
-------------------------
Updates to nwrite will be made available from the ftp site:
	ftp://ftp.csua.berkeley.edu/pub/nwrite/

Suggestions for future versions, ports to new platforms, bug reports, etc.
can be e-mailed to
	nwrite@csua.berkeley.edu

If you want to redistribute nwrite, either modified or unmodified, then you
may do so if you follow the terms above. However, if you do so, please mail
nwrite@csua.berkeley.edu and let us know about it so we can let you know when
updates are released.

What does the "n" in nwrite stand for?
--------------------------------------
Take your pick:
	- eNhanced write
	- "New" write
	- Nicosia's write
	- Neat-o write
	- Nifty write
	- Nicer write
	- Nothing at all
or make up your own answer.

Acknowledgments
---------------
nwrite has come out of the online community of the Computer Science
Undergraduate Association at the University of California at Berkeley, and
probably wouldn't exist at all, or in anything like it's current form if it
wasn't for the CSUA. Many features are from what the members of the
community wanted out of an "improved" write tool.

If you are one of those people who insist on giving something in return for
software, the CSUA is an official IRS-registered non-profit charitable
organization, and does accept donations. See http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/
or contact politburo@csua.berkeley.edu for more information about the CSUA
itself. (But please don't bug them about nwrite!)
