.SH DESCRIPTION
The
.B podiff
utility finds differences in translatable strings and translations
between two PO files or between two revisions of the same file. It
uses
.BR diff (1)
to generate the output. Before comparing, it eliminates all comments
and multiple empty lines, sorts the two files by their \fBmsgid\fR and
reformats all textual strings in a uniform manner. The utility is
intended to help translators obtain meaningful information about
changes they do to PO files.
.PP
When supplied two non-optional arguments
.B podiff
acts as a standalone program and outputs differences between the
two PO files. Its exit code is 1 if the two files differ and 0
otherwise.
.PP
When given 7 arguments (second case above),
.B podiff
compares
.I OLD-FILE
and
.IR NEW-FILE .
This mode is intended for use as a
.BR git (1)
external diff utility (see
.I GIT_EXTERNAL_DIFF
in
.BR git (1)
and
.B "Generating diff text"
in
.BR gitattributes (5)).
In this mode its exit code is always 0, except if some errors occur.
See the
.B EXAMPLE
section below.

The \fBpodiff\fR utility understand the following command line options:
.TP
\fB\-d\fR \fICMD\fR
Use \fICMD\fR as a \fBdiff\fR utility.
.TP
\fB\-D\fR \fIOPTION\fR
Pass \fIOPTION\fR as an option to the diff utility.
.TP
.B \-f
Ignore fuzzy translations.
.TP
.B \-k
Keep user comments on output.
.TP
.B \-L
External \fBdiff\fR understands the \fB\-L\fR option. If this option
is given,
.B podiff
will pass two additional options to
.BR diff :
\fB\-La/\fIFILE\fB \-Lb/\fIFILE\fR,
where \fIFILE\fR is the pathname of the file being diff'ed.
.TP
\fB\-w\fR \fINUM\fR
Limit output width to \fINUM\fR columns (see \fBBUGS\fR below, though).
.TP
.B \-t
Test mode. In this mode, \fBpodiff\fR takes a single file name as
its argument and acts as a preprocessor for this file, producing its
normalized version on the standard output. This mode is intended for
debugging.
.TP
.B \-h
Prints a terse usage summary.
.TP
.B \-v
Prints program version and licence information.
.SH "RETURN VALUE"
In standalone mode (2 arguments), the return code is 0 if the two
files don't differ and 1 otherwise.

In Git mode, the return code is 0 unless errors occur.

The return code is 2 if an invalid command line option or invalid
number of arguments is given.
.SH EXAMPLE
The following example shows how to use
.B podiff
as an external diff utility in
.BR git (1).
The system \fBdiff\fR utility will be passed the \fB\-u\fR and
two \fB\-L\fR options.
.PP
First, add the following section to the
.B .git/config
file:
.PP
.EX
[diff "podiff"]
        command = /usr/bin/podiff \-D\-u \-L
.EE
.PP
Next, to the \fB.gitattributes\fR file in the directory with your PO
files, add the following line:
.PP
.EX
*.po diff=podiff
.EE
.\" The MANCGI variable is set by man.cgi script on Ulysses.
.\" The download.inc file contains the default DOWNLOAD section
.\" for man-based doc pages.
.if "\V[MANCGI]"WEBDOC" \{\
. ds package podiff
. ds version 1.1
. so download.inc
\}
.SH "SEE ALSO"
.BR diff (1),
.BR git (1),
.BR gitattributes (5).
.SH BUGS
The \fB\-w\fR option actually operates on \fBbytes\fR, not characters,
therefore actual output width can be less than its argument.
