README for libsane-extras
-------------------------

 The libsane-extras package provides some SANE backends not yet included in the
regular SANE distribution.

 Backends currently included in libsane-extras :
  * epkowa
  * geniusvp2
  * hp_rts88xx
  * hp3900

For an history of this package, see changelog.Debian.gz.

 How to use the backends:
 ------------------------

 The backends are automatically enabled when libsane-extras is installed. See
 the libsane-extras file in /etc/sane.d/dll.d to enable or disable the backends
 provided by this package. This file is similar to SANE's dll.conf file.

 Edit the backend's configuration file, located in /etc/sane.d/, and named after
 the backend.

 About the epkowa backend
 ------------------------

 The epkowa backend is a modified epson backend released by EPSON, with improved
 support for some of the scanners supported by the epson backend.

 You'll need to disable the epson backend in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf to use the
 epkowa backend.

 For some scanners, the epkowa backends relies on proprietary, binary-only
 modules that are loaded at runtime if needed; those modules are of course NOT
 provided in this Debian package, due to their obvious non-freeness. For the
 affected scanners, the backend will simply fail to work. In addition to the
 module, the firmware file for the scanner is also required.

 The following scanners require the use of a proprietary module to work with
 the epkowa backend:

   GT-7200 / Perfection 1250 / Perfection 1250 PHOTO
   GT-7300 / Perfection 1260 / Perfection 1260 PHOTO
   GT-F500 / Perfection 2480 PHOTO
   GT-F550 / Perfection 2580 PHOTO
   GT-9400 / Perfection 3170 PHOTO
   GT-F520 / Perfection 3490 PHOTO
   GT-F570 / Perfection 3590 PHOTO
   GT-F600 / Perfection 4180 PHOTO
   GT-X750 / Perfection 4490 PHOTO
   Perfection V10
   Perfection V100 PHOTO
   Perfection V350 PHOTO

 You can download the module and firmware files from the Epson Avasys website at:
             <http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html>
 The module and firmware files are distributed in the form of an RPM package;
 you'll need to install the rpm and cpio Debian package to extract the content
 of the RPM file:
  - rpm2cpio iscan-plugin-....rpm > foo.cpio
  - cpio -i --make-directories --no-absolute-filenames < foo.cpio

 The module and firmware files will be available in the usr/lib/iscan and
 usr/share/iscan directories, relative to the current directory. You need
 to copy the module files to /usr/lib/iscan and the firmware file to
 /usr/share/iscan.

 => How to get a backend included in this package ?
 --------------------------------------------------

 File a bug with severity "wishlist" against the libsane-extras package, in the
 Debian Bug Tracking System (BTS). See http://bugs.debian.org for more information
 on how to file a bug.

 Include a short description of the backend in your bug report, along with a URL
 where more information can be found, and where the backend can be downloaded.

 If all goes well, a new revision of the package will be rolled out a few days
 later, including this new backend.

 For any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me.
