<para>Returns the number of rows in the result set.</para>
<para>The use of <literal>mysql_num_rows</literal> depends on
whether you use <literal>mysql_store_result</literal> or
<literal>mysql_use_result</literal> to return the result set.
If you use <literal>mysql_store_result</literal>,
<literal>mysql_num_rows</literal> may be called immediately.
If you use <literal>mysql_use_result</literal>,
<literal>mysql_num_rows</literal> does not return the correct
value until all the rows in the result set have been retrieved.</para>
<para><literal>mysql_num_rows</literal> is intended for use with
statements that return a result set, such as SELECT.
For statements such as INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE,
the number of affected rows can be obtained with
<literal>mysql_affected_rows</literal>.</para>
