.so ../sci.an
.SH NAME
exists - checks variable existence
.SH CALLING SEQUENCE
.nf
exists(name [,where])
.fi
.SH PARAMETERS
.TP 10
name
: a character string
.TP
where
: an optional character string with default value \fV'all'\fR
.SH DESCRIPTION
\fVexists(name)\fR returns \fV1\fR if the variable named \fVname\fR
exists and \fV0\fR otherwise.

Caveats: a function which uses \fVexists\fR may return a result which depends on the environment!

\fVexists(name,'local')\fR returns \fV1\fR if the variable named
\fVname\fR exists in the local environment of the current function and
\fV0\fR otherwise.

.SH EXAMPLE
.nf
deff('foo(x)',..
['disp([exists(''a12''),exists(''a12'',''local'')])'
 'disp([exists(''x''),exists(''x'',''local'')])'])
foo(1)
a12=[];foo(1)
