Screem helper applications
--------------------------
A helper application is simple an external program that can act as a filter.
ie it can read from the standard input, and output its results to the
standard output.
For a helper application it is currently required that output is produced,
although this may change so that helper applications can process a page and
save the results out to a file or perform some other task.
Adding a helper application
---------------------------
Select Settings->Preferences and the Helper apps tab.
enter the path in the path field, or click on browse and select it with
the file selector (you can also drop a file onto the field and the path
will be inserted)
Currently the mime type field is not used so you can leave it blank.
Then simply click on add.
Removing unwanted helpers
-------------------------
Select Settings->Preferences and the Helper apps tab.
Click on the helper you no longer want, then click the remove button
Executing helpers
-----------------
Helpers are executed from the popup editor menu, you can then either click
on the helper that you wish to execute or you can choose to execute all the
helpers in order.
Provided helpers
----------------
Some simple helper applications are provided in the helpers directory of
the source distribution.
Currently the only one is date.pl.
This requires that you have perl installed on your system (under /usr)
What it does is insert the last updated time of the page, using the same
method as the Emacs HTML mode does, namely via the following html:
<!-- hhmts start -->
time is inserted in here
<!-- hhmts end -->
the 3 lines must be kept on a line by themselves, you can place any other
HTML after the line with the time on and before the end comment.
