sdc for Debian
----------------------

To give you the short and sweet, this package tries to be a one stop
shopping experience for writing documentation in SGML. No need to
deal with the intricies of Jade/DSSL, and all that jazz. In addtion,
the supplied DTDs are some of the simplest in the market, letting you
really focus on your document on forget all that tagging.

There are a few drawbacks however. The biggest is that, unlike Jade,
you can't plug in any arbitrary DTDs and style sheets. You must use
the supplied DTDs. However, the developer assures us that it's pretty
easy to add new DTDs if you are willing to dig into some code. The
whole system is in scheme, which I find very readable. (I, and the
upstream author, welcome any contributions.)

The other drawback is that you are limited in what you can produce.
I.e., it's non-trivial, although not hard at all, to change with the
BODY tag of a document.

This package is included in the 'contrib' section and cannot be a part
of STandard Debian because it relies on a non-free scheme compiler
('bigloo'). According to the author, it would be very difficult to port the entire program to another scheme compiler.

Known problems (watch out, but still feel free to report them if
they bug you):

* Some configuration files aren't conffiles, and live under
/usr/lib/sdc. Tell me if you have to resort to hacking any of the
  files under /usr/lib/sdc

* Watch out when you're using notations. They will sometimes
overwrite existing files! I'm slowly going through fixing this.

* Some notations don't work. I'm slowly going through fixing this.
What I use daily works. ;)

* Some documentation files may not be in HTML yet, though they should
be. Let me know if some documentation you want to access isn't
  already available in HTML.

* The documentation sometimes still refers to itself as 'typeset', an
old name for the program. I fixed a lot of this but not all.

* There are still many spelling errors in documentation.

* There's chicken and egg problem in the build process. It requires
sdc is installed to build it. I don't know if I can fix this or not.

Here's what you need to build this, and the versions I used.
Some of these may not be necessary, or alternate versions might
work just as well, I don't know.

  bigloo 1.8b-4
  sp 1.3-1.1-4
  lout 3.10-1.1
  groff 1.11a-2
  tgif 3.0-p17-3
  bsdmainutils 4.1
  tetex-base 0.4pl8-7
  tetex-bin 0.4pl8-4
  tetex-dev 0.4pl8-4
  tetex-extra 0.4pl8-3
gs-aladdin 5.10-6 (stock gs should work)
  gsfonts 4.01-6
type1inst 0.6-1 (I have the Adobe font suite installed, except
for times roman, which causes some problems.)
