This manual page
documents the GNU version of
.BR basename .
The
.B basename
command removes any leading directory components from
.IR name ;
If
.I suffix
is specified and is identical to the end of
.IR name ,
it is removed from
.I name
as well.
.B basename
prints the resulting name on the standard output.
