README for SML/NJ, Debian Systems
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A quick note about i386-centrism:

Due to the nice little chicken-and-egg problem that the SML compiler is written
in SML, only architectures who are supported upstream (x86, alpha, and sparc)
are capable of compiling this package. But it is unknown (at least by me)
whether or not the upstream binaries are capable of working under Linux (only
x86-linux is supported by the development team). Patches for these archs are
welcomed.

Other archs are out of luck.

A quick note about the build process:

SML/NJ's install.sh assumes that you are building it in the place where it will
finally reside. The debian/chicken-and-egg.sh script from the source tricks
the build process by symlinking the final location to the build location.
Under this setup, it is not possible to build the package while it is
installed. I'm working on a new build process which doesn't need this ugly
hack.
