This file contains information about building SoQt on Mac OS X.

General information
====================

Building SoQt on Mac OS X should be straightforward. If it isn't, we
consider this a bug, so please let us know and we'll be happy to fix it.

If you install Coin from the binary SDK, please note that you also
have to install the CoinTools.pkg (in the tools directory of the
Coin-2.0.1 binary distribution), since the coin-config utility is
needed by SoQt/configure.

SoQt is installed as SoQt.framework by default. For more information
about frameworks, please refer to the README.MAC file that comes with
Coin. 

Note that we do not support Mac OS 10.0.x. It will probably work just
fine if you compile SoQt yourself, but we don't guarantee that. Please
upgrade to 10.1, you will be amazed by the increase in performance and
stability anyway.


Qt/Mac vs. Qt/X11
=================

SoQt is dependent on Trolltech's Qt library. On Mac OS X, you have two options:

1. Use the native Qt/Mac
2. Use X11 and Qt/X11

Qt/Mac[0] is the Mac OS X native implementation of Qt. This will
usually be your first choice, since it does not require any additional
software to be installed, and provides the full Aqua look'n'feel.

Alternatively, you can install Apple's X11 for Mac OS X, and use
Qt/X11, the version of Qt used on all other UNIX systems. You will
find instructions on how to do this below. 


Using SoQt together with the X11 Window system
==============================================

To use SoQt with X11 and Qt/X11, follow these steps:


1. Install X11 for Mac OS X.

X11 for Mac OS X offers a complete X Window System implementation for
running X11-based applications on Mac OS X. It includes the full
X11R6.6 technology including an X11 window server, Quartz window
manager, libraries, and basic utilities such as xterm, and is fully
integrated with Mac OS X. See [1] for more information about X11 for
Mac OS X.

You can download the X11 for Mac OS X Public beta from [2]. Note that
you will also need the X11 SDK, a link to which can be found the same
page.

Installation of X11 is done through a standard Mac OS X Installer, so
it should be no problem. After installation, run the
/Applications/X11.app, which starts the X Server, the Quartz-based
window manager, and an xterm.

Please read the X11 FAQ[3] before installing, it contains important
information!

Note that only Apple's X11 is supported. (XDarwin, the X installation
through fink, or anything else will probably not work.)


2. Install Qt/X11.

SoQt depends on Qt/X11. It does not really matter how you install Qt,
but I suggest you use fink. Fink is a dpkg-based distribution of UNIX
tools for Mac OS X that allows easy installation, updating, and
removing of packages. See [4] for information about fink. It is
really easy to use, and an extremely convenient way to install
UNIX-tools on Mac OS X.

If you have a working fink installation, you can install Qt/X11 by
simply typing

       $ fink install qt3 qt3-dev qt3-shlibs

Note that neither fink nor Qt or SIM products, so please contact the
respective maintainers if you find bugs or have problems using these
pieces of software.


3. Install SoQt.

You have to tell configure to use X11 (otherwise, the Mac native
window system is preferred) by specifying the --enable-x11 configure
flag. 

      $ /path/to/SoQt/configure --enable-x11
      $ make 
      $ sudo make install

That should be all. 



Common problems (and solutions)
===============================


Undefined QTDIR in bash
-----------------------

Note that if you use bash as your default shell, you must make it read
your .bashrc file - it does not do that by default.

So if you have defined QTDIR in your ~/.bashrc, and still configure
fails with because it cannot find Qt, check if QTDIR is actually set:

  % echo $QTDIR

If this is empty, you have a problem. Make sure you are actually using
bash -

   % echo $SHELL

... and that the content of your ~/.bashrc looks reasonable, something
like this:

  export QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
  export PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH
  export MANPATH=$QTDIR/doc/man:$MANPATH
  export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH:$QTDIR/lib

If you are using bash, and your .bashrc is correct, but QTDIR doesn't
get set, you have to make bash read your .bashrc file. To do that,
create a file called ~/.bash_profile with the following content:

  if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
    . ~/.bashrc
  fi

Open a new Terminal window - things should work now. If you still have
problems, something else is wrong. In that case, feel free to let us know.


Problems with older versions of Qt/Mac
---------------------------------------

The first Qt/Mac releases contained a number of serious bugs that also 
affect SoQt. If you encounter strange behaviour, it might very well be
that upgrading to the latest version of Qt/Mac will fix the problem. 


Qt/Mac 3.1 problems
-------------------

Qt/Mac 3.1.x contained major improvements vs. Qt/Mac 3.0.x. Unfortunately, 
it also introduced a number of bugs. SoQt/Mac contains workarounds for
the relevant problems. Every time that one of these is used, a warning will 
be displayed. You can disable these warning messages by setting the 
environment variable SOQT_NO_QTMAC_BUG_WARNINGS=1.


o If the OpenGL context overlaps the QSizeGrip in the lower right corner
  of the window (present in all Mac OS X windows by default), resizing of 
  the OpenGL context does not work. Therefore, in SoQtRenderArea and 
  SoQtExaminerViewer without decorations, we have to leave 15 pixel at the 
  bottom blank. 

  This bug is present in Qt/Mac 3.1.0 and 3.1.1. It has been fixed in
  Qt/Mac 3.1.2.

  If you are using a newer snapshot of Qt/Mac 3.1.1 (after 20030121),
  the problem should be fixed there. In this case, you can override the
  workaround by setting the environment variable
  FORCE_NO_QTMAC_31_RESIZE_WORKAROUND=1.  


o Custom cursors do not work in Qt/Mac 3.1.x. Therefore, we display a
  standard "arrow" cursor. 

  This bug is present in Qt/Mac 3.1.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1.2. It will be
  fixed in Qt/Mac 3.1.3.
