Das <a href="http://www.gnu.org/gnu/the-gnu-project.html">GNU Projekt</a>
wurde 1984 begonnen, um ein vollständiges Unix-artiges Betriebssystem
zu entwickeln, das <a
href="http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.de.html">freie Software</a>
ist; das GNU System. (GNU ist eine rekursive Abkürzung von "GNU's Not
Unix", ausgesprochen wird es "DJI-N-JUH".) Varianten des GNU
Systems, die auf dem Linux-Kernel basieren, sind weit verbreitet. Auch
wenn diese Systeme oft einfach "Linux" genannt werden, ist die
Bezeichnung <a
href="http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html">GNU/Linux-Systeme</a>
genauer. </p>
<p>
Dies ist auch die Web-Site der 1985 gegründeten Free Software
Foundation (FSF). Die FSF ist der hauptsächliche organisatorische
Sponsor des GNU Projektes. Die FSF erhält sehr wenig
Unterstützung von Firmen oder Stiftungen. Wir sind auf die
Unterstützung angewiesen, die wir von Einzelpersonen wie Ihnen
erhalten und die das Anliegen der FSF voranbringen wollen: Sicherung,
Schutz und Förderung der Freiheit, Computer Software zu benutzen,
zu studieren, zu kopieren, zu verändern und zu verteilen, und
daneben die Rechte der Benutzer von Freier Software zu verteidigen. Im
Jahr 2003 kamen 67 Prozent der Gelder für unsere Arbeit von
individuellen Spendern. Diese fortwährende Unterstützung ist
der wichtigste Weg, der es uns ermöglicht, unsere Arbeit
