\v 2 That \w Hanani|strong="H2607"\w*, \w one|strong="H0259"\w* of my \w brethren|strong="H0251"\w*, \w came|strong="H0935"\w*, he and \add certain\add* \w men|strong="H0582"\w* of \w Judah|strong="H3063"\w*; and I \w asked|strong="H7592"\w* them concerning the \w Jews|strong="H3064"\w* that had \w escaped|strong="H6413"\w*, which were \w left|strong="H7604"\w* of the \w captivity|strong="H7628"\w*, and concerning \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*.

\v 6 Let thine \w ear|strong="H0241"\w* now be \w attentive|strong="H7183"\w*, and thine \w eyes|strong="H5869"\w* \w open|strong="H6605"\w*, that thou mayest \w hear|strong="H8085"\w* the \w prayer|strong="H8605"\w* of thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w*, which I \w pray|strong="H6419"\w* \w before|strong="H6440"\w* thee \w now|strong="H3117"\w*, \w day|strong="H3119"\w* and \w night|strong="H3915"\w*, for the \w children|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Israel|strong="H3478"\w* thy \w servants|strong="H5650"\w*, and \w confess|strong="H3034"\w* the \w sins|strong="H2403"\w* of the \w children|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Israel|strong="H3478"\w*, which we have \w sinned|strong="H2398"\w* against thee: both I and my \w father’s|strong="H0001"\w* \w house|strong="H1004"\w* have \w sinned|strong="H2398"\w*.  
\v 7 We have dealt \w very|strong="H2254"\w* \w corruptly|strong="H2254"\w* against thee, and have not \w kept|strong="H8104"\w* the \w commandments|strong="H4687"\w*, nor the \w statutes|strong="H2706"\w*, nor the \w judgments|strong="H4941"\w*, which thou \w commandedst|strong="H6680"\w* thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w* \w Moses|strong="H4872"\w*.  
\v 8 \w Remember|strong="H2142"\w*, I beseech thee, the \w word|strong="H1697"\w* that thou \w commandedst|strong="H6680"\w* thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w* \w Moses|strong="H4872"\w*, \w saying|strong="H0559"\w*, \add If\add* ye \w transgress|strong="H4603"\w*, I will scatter you \w abroad|strong="H6327"\w* among the \w nations|strong="H5971"\w*:  
\v 9 But \add if\add* ye \w turn|strong="H7725"\w* unto me, and \w keep|strong="H8104"\w* my \w commandments|strong="H4687"\w*, and \w do|strong="H6213"\w* them; though there were of you cast \w out|strong="H5080"\w* unto the uttermost \w part|strong="H7097"\w* of the \w heaven|strong="H8064"\w*, \add yet\add* will I \w gather|strong="H6908"\w* them from thence, and will \w bring|strong="H0935"\w* them unto the \w place|strong="H4725"\w* that I have \w chosen|strong="H0977"\w* to \w set|strong="H7931"\w* my \w name|strong="H8034"\w* there.  
\v 10 Now these \add are\add* thy \w servants|strong="H5650"\w* and thy \w people|strong="H5971"\w*, whom thou hast \w redeemed|strong="H6299"\w* by thy \w great|strong="H1419"\w* \w power|strong="H3581"\w*, and by thy \w strong|strong="H2389"\w* \w hand|strong="H3027"\w*.  
\v 11 O \w Lord|strong="H0136"\w*, I \w beseech|strong="H0577"\w* thee, let now thine \w ear|strong="H0241"\w* be \w attentive|strong="H7183"\w* to the \w prayer|strong="H8605"\w* of thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w*, and to the \w prayer|strong="H8605"\w* of thy \w servants|strong="H5650"\w*, who \w desire|strong="H2655"\w* to \w fear|strong="H3372"\w* thy \w name|strong="H8034"\w*: and \w prosper|strong="H6743"\w*, I pray thee, thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w* this \w day|strong="H3117"\w*, and \w grant|strong="H5414"\w* him \w mercy|strong="H7356"\w* in the \w sight|strong="H6440"\w* of this \w man|strong="H0376"\w*. \v 1 And it came to pass in the \w month|strong="H2320"\w* \w Nisan|strong="H5212"\w*, in the \w twentieth|strong="H6242"\w* \w year|strong="H8141"\w* of \w Artaxerxes|strong="H0783"\w* the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, \add that\add* \w wine|strong="H3196"\w* \add was\add* \w before|strong="H6440"\w* him: and I took \w up|strong="H5375"\w* the \w wine|strong="H3196"\w*, and \w gave|strong="H5414"\w* \add it\add* unto the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*. Now I had not been \add beforetime\add* \w sad|strong="H7451"\w* in his \w presence|strong="H6440"\w*.  
\v 2 Wherefore the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto me, Why \add is\add* thy \w countenance|strong="H6440"\w* \w sad|strong="H7451"\w*, seeing thou \add art\add* not \w sick|strong="H2470"\w*? this \add is\add* nothing \add else\add* but \w sorrow|strong="H7455"\w* of \w heart|strong="H3820"\w*. Then I was \w very|strong="H3966"\w* \w sore|strong="H7235"\w* \w afraid|strong="H3372"\w*,  
\v 3 And \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, Let the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* \w live|strong="H2421"\w* for \w ever|strong="H5769"\w*: why should not my \w countenance|strong="H6440"\w* be \w sad|strong="H3415"\w*, when the \w city|strong="H5892"\w*, the \w place|strong="H1004"\w* of my \w fathers’|strong="H0001"\w* \w sepulchres|strong="H6913"\w*, \add lieth\add* \w waste|strong="H2720"\w*, and the \w gates|strong="H8179"\w* thereof are \w consumed|strong="H0398"\w* with \w fire|strong="H0784"\w*?  
\v 4 Then the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto me, For what dost thou make \w request|strong="H1245"\w*? So I \w prayed|strong="H6419"\w* to the \w God|strong="H0430"\w* of \w heaven|strong="H8064"\w*.  
\v 5 And I \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, If it \w please|strong="H2895"\w* the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, and if thy \w servant|strong="H5650"\w* have found \w favour|strong="H3190"\w* in thy \w sight|strong="H6440"\w*, that thou wouldest \w send|strong="H7971"\w* me unto \w Judah|strong="H3063"\w*, unto the \w city|strong="H5892"\w* of my \w fathers’|strong="H0001"\w* \w sepulchres|strong="H6913"\w*, that I may \w build|strong="H1129"\w* it.  
\v 6 And the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto me, (the \w queen|strong="H7694"\w* also \w sitting|strong="H3427"\w* by \w him|strong="H0681"\w*,) For how long shall thy \w journey|strong="H4109"\w* be? and when wilt thou \w return|strong="H7725"\w*? So it \w pleased|strong="H3190"\w* the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* to \w send|strong="H7971"\w* me; and I \w set|strong="H5414"\w* him a \w time|strong="H2165"\w*.\f + \fr 2.6 \ft queen: Heb. wife\f*  
\v 7 Moreover I \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, If it \w please|strong="H2895"\w* the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*, let \w letters|strong="H0107"\w* be \w given|strong="H5414"\w* me to the \w governors|strong="H6346"\w* \w beyond|strong="H5676"\w* the \w river|strong="H5104"\w*, that they may convey me \w over|strong="H5674"\w* till I \w come|strong="H0935"\w* into \w Judah|strong="H3063"\w*;  
\v 8 And a \w letter|strong="H0107"\w* unto \w Asaph|strong="H0623"\w* the \w keeper|strong="H8104"\w* of the \w king’s|strong="H4428"\w* \w forest|strong="H6508"\w*, that he may \w give|strong="H5414"\w* me \w timber|strong="H6086"\w* to make \w beams|strong="H7136"\w* for the \w gates|strong="H8179"\w* of the \w palace|strong="H1002"\w* which \add appertained\add* to the \w house|strong="H1004"\w*, and for the \w wall|strong="H2346"\w* of the \w city|strong="H5892"\w*, and for the \w house|strong="H1004"\w* that I shall enter \w into|strong="H0935"\w*. And the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* \w granted|strong="H5414"\w* me, according to the \w good|strong="H2896"\w* \w hand|strong="H3027"\w* of my \w God|strong="H0430"\w* upon me.

\v 9 ¶ Then I \w came|strong="H0935"\w* to the \w governors|strong="H6346"\w* \w beyond|strong="H5676"\w* the \w river|strong="H5104"\w*, and \w gave|strong="H5414"\w* them the \w king’s|strong="H4428"\w* \w letters|strong="H0107"\w*. Now the \w king|strong="H4428"\w* had \w sent|strong="H7971"\w* \w captains|strong="H8269"\w* of the \w army|strong="H2428"\w* and \w horsemen|strong="H6571"\w* with me.  
\v 10 When \w Sanballat|strong="H5571"\w* the \w Horonite|strong="H2772"\w*, and \w Tobiah|strong="H2900"\w* the \w servant|strong="H5650"\w*, the \w Ammonite|strong="H5984"\w*, \w heard|strong="H8085"\w* \add of it\add*, it \w grieved|strong="H3415"\w* them \w exceedingly|strong="H7451"\w* that there was \w come|strong="H0935"\w* a \w man|strong="H0120"\w* to \w seek|strong="H1245"\w* the \w welfare|strong="H2896"\w* of the \w children|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Israel|strong="H3478"\w*.  
\v 11 So I \w came|strong="H0935"\w* to \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*, and was there \w three|strong="H7969"\w* \w days|strong="H3117"\w*.

\v 12 ¶ And I \w arose|strong="H6965"\w* in the \w night|strong="H3915"\w*, I and \w some|strong="H4592"\w* \w few|strong="H4592"\w* \w men|strong="H0582"\w* with me; neither \w told|strong="H5046"\w* I \add any\add* \w man|strong="H0120"\w* what my \w God|strong="H0430"\w* had \w put|strong="H5414"\w* in my \w heart|strong="H3820"\w* to \w do|strong="H6213"\w* at \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*: neither \add was there any\add* \w beast|strong="H0929"\w* with me, save the \w beast|strong="H0929"\w* that I rode \w upon|strong="H7392"\w*.  
\v 13 And I went \w out|strong="H3318"\w* by \w night|strong="H3915"\w* by the \w gate|strong="H8179"\w* of the \w valley|strong="H1516"\w*, even \w before|strong="H6440"\w* the \w dragon|strong="H8577"\w* \w well|strong="H5869"\w*, and to the \w dung|strong="H0830"\w* \w port|strong="H8179"\w*, and \w viewed|strong="H7663"\w* the \w walls|strong="H2346"\w* of \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*, which were broken \w down|strong="H6555"\w*, and the \w gates|strong="H8179"\w* thereof were \w consumed|strong="H0398"\w* with \w fire|strong="H0784"\w*.  
\v 14 Then I went \w on|strong="H5674"\w* to the \w gate|strong="H8179"\w* of the \w fountain|strong="H5869"\w*, and to the \w king’s|strong="H4428"\w* \w pool|strong="H1295"\w*: but \add there was\add* no \w place|strong="H4725"\w* for the \w beast|strong="H0929"\w* \add that was\add* under me to \w pass|strong="H5674"\w*.  
\v 15 Then went I \w up|strong="H5927"\w* in the \w night|strong="H3915"\w* by the \w brook|strong="H5158"\w*, and \w viewed|strong="H7663"\w* the \w wall|strong="H2346"\w*, and turned \w back|strong="H7725"\w*, and \w entered|strong="H0935"\w* by the \w gate|strong="H8179"\w* of the \w valley|strong="H1516"\w*, and \add so\add* \w returned|strong="H7725"\w*.  
\v 16 And the \w rulers|strong="H5461"\w* \w knew|strong="H3045"\w* not whither I \w went|strong="H1980"\w*, or what I \w did|strong="H6213"\w*; neither had I as \w yet|strong="H3651"\w* \w told|strong="H5046"\w* \add it\add* to the \w Jews|strong="H3064"\w*, nor to the \w priests|strong="H3548"\w*, nor to the \w nobles|strong="H2715"\w*, nor to the \w rulers|strong="H5461"\w*, nor to the \w rest|strong="H3499"\w* that \w did|strong="H6213"\w* the \w work|strong="H4399"\w*.

\v 17 ¶ Then \w said|strong="H0559"\w* I unto them, Ye \w see|strong="H7200"\w* the \w distress|strong="H7451"\w* that we \add are\add* in, how \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w* \add lieth\add* \w waste|strong="H2720"\w*, and the \w gates|strong="H8179"\w* thereof are \w burned|strong="H3341"\w* with \w fire|strong="H0784"\w*: \w come|strong="H3212"\w*, and let us build \w up|strong="H1129"\w* the \w wall|strong="H2346"\w* of \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*, that we be no more a \w reproach|strong="H2781"\w*.  
\v 18 Then I \w told|strong="H5046"\w* them of the \w hand|strong="H3027"\w* of my \w God|strong="H0430"\w* which was \w good|strong="H2896"\w* upon me; as also the \w king’s|strong="H4428"\w* \w words|strong="H1697"\w* that he had \w spoken|strong="H0559"\w* unto me. And they \w said|strong="H0559"\w*, Let us rise \w up|strong="H6965"\w* and \w build|strong="H1129"\w*. So they \w strengthened|strong="H2388"\w* their \w hands|strong="H3027"\w* for \add this\add* \w good|strong="H2896"\w* \add work\add*.  
\v 19 But when \w Sanballat|strong="H5571"\w* the \w Horonite|strong="H2772"\w*, and \w Tobiah|strong="H2900"\w* the \w servant|strong="H5650"\w*, the \w Ammonite|strong="H5984"\w*, and \w Geshem|strong="H1654"\w* the \w Arabian|strong="H6163"\w*, \w heard|strong="H8085"\w* \add it\add*, they laughed us to \w scorn|strong="H3932"\w*, and \w despised|strong="H0959"\w* us, and \w said|strong="H0559"\w*, What \add is\add* this \w thing|strong="H1697"\w* that ye \w do|strong="H6213"\w*? will ye \w rebel|strong="H4775"\w* against the \w king|strong="H4428"\w*?  
\v 20 Then \w answered|strong="H7725"\w* I them, and \w said|strong="H0559"\w* unto them, The \w God|strong="H0430"\w* of \w heaven|strong="H8064"\w*, he will \w prosper|strong="H6743"\w* us; therefore we his \w servants|strong="H5650"\w* will \w arise|strong="H6965"\w* and \w build|strong="H1129"\w*: but ye have no \w portion|strong="H2506"\w*, nor \w right|strong="H6666"\w*, nor \w memorial|strong="H2146"\w*, in \w Jerusalem|strong="H3389"\w*.

\v 4 And next unto \w them|strong="H3027"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Meremoth|strong="H4822"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Urijah|strong="H0223"\w*, the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Koz|strong="H6976"\w*. And next unto \w them|strong="H3027"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Meshullam|strong="H4918"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Berechiah|strong="H1296"\w*, the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Meshezabeel|strong="H4898"\w*. And next unto \w them|strong="H3027"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Zadok|strong="H6659"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Baana|strong="H1195"\w*.  
\v 5 And next unto \w them|strong="H3027"\w* the \w Tekoites|strong="H8621"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w*; but their \w nobles|strong="H0117"\w* \w put|strong="H0935"\w* not their \w necks|strong="H6677"\w* to the \w work|strong="H5656"\w* of their \w Lord|strong="H0113"\w*.  
\v 6 Moreover the \w old|strong="H3465"\w* \w gate|strong="H8179"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Jehoiada|strong="H3111"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Paseah|strong="H6454"\w*, and \w Meshullam|strong="H4918"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Besodeiah|strong="H1152"\w*; they laid the \w beams|strong="H7136"\w* thereof, and set \w up|strong="H5975"\w* the \w doors|strong="H1817"\w* thereof, and the \w locks|strong="H4514"\w* thereof, and the \w bars|strong="H1280"\w* thereof.  
\v 7 And next unto \w them|strong="H3027"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Melatiah|strong="H4424"\w* the \w Gibeonite|strong="H1393"\w*, and \w Jadon|strong="H3036"\w* the \w Meronothite|strong="H4824"\w*, the \w men|strong="H0582"\w* of \w Gibeon|strong="H1391"\w*, and of \w Mizpah|strong="H4709"\w*, unto the \w throne|strong="H3678"\w* of the \w governor|strong="H6346"\w* on this \w side|strong="H5676"\w* the \w river|strong="H5104"\w*.  
\v 8 Next unto \w him|strong="H3027"\w* \w repaired|strong="H2388"\w* \w Uzziel|strong="H5816"\w* the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Harhaiah|strong="H2736"\w*, of the \w goldsmiths|strong="H6884"\w*. \v 2 That \w Sanballat|strong="H5571"\w* and \w Geshem|strong="H1654"\w* \w sent|strong="H7971"\w* unto me, \w saying|strong="H0559"\w*, \w Come|strong="H3212"\w*, let us \w meet|strong="H3259"\w* \w together|strong="H3162"\w* in \add some one of\add* the \w villages|strong="H3715"\w* in the \w plain|strong="H1237"\w* of \w Ono|strong="H0207"\w*. But they \w thought|strong="H2803"\w* to \w do|strong="H6213"\w* me \w mischief|strong="H7451"\w*.

\v 11 And I \w said|strong="H0559"\w*, Should \w such|strong="H3644"\w* a \w man|strong="H0376"\w* as I \w flee|strong="H1272"\w*? and who \add is there\add*, that, \add being\add* as I \add am\add*, would \w go|strong="H0935"\w* into the \w temple|strong="H1964"\w* to save his \w life|strong="H2425"\w*? I will not go \w in|strong="H0935"\w*.  
\v 12 And, lo, I \w perceived|strong="H5234"\w* that \w God|strong="H0430"\w* had not \w sent|strong="H7971"\w* him; but that he \w pronounced|strong="H1696"\w* this \w prophecy|strong="H5016"\w* against me: for \w Tobiah|strong="H2900"\w* and \w Sanballat|strong="H5571"\w* had \w hired|strong="H7936"\w* him.

\v 28 And \add one\add* of the \w sons|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Joiada|strong="H3111"\w*, the \w son|strong="H1121"\w* of \w Eliashib|strong="H0475"\w* the \w high|strong="H1419"\w* \w priest|strong="H3548"\w*, \add was\add* son in \w law|strong="H2860"\w* to \w Sanballat|strong="H5571"\w* the \w Horonite|strong="H2772"\w*: therefore I \w chased|strong="H1272"\w* him from me.  
\v 29 \w Remember|strong="H2142"\w* them, O my \w God|strong="H0430"\w*, because they have \w defiled|strong="H1352"\w* the \w priesthood|strong="H3550"\w*, and the \w covenant|strong="H1285"\w* of the \w priesthood|strong="H3550"\w*, and of the \w Levites|strong="H3881"\w*.\f + \fr 13.29 \ft because…: Heb. for the defilings\f*
