<h2 class="section"> 1.1 Cell and Transfer equations </h2>

<p>In the <acronym title="Transfer Evolution Formalism">TEF</acronym>, a model is
mathematically represented by a set of equations corresponding
to two kinds objects:
</p>
<ol>
<li> Cells which are elementary models and correspond to evolution equations
such as:

    <center class="math-display" >
<img
src="mini_ker_tex4ht_tex0x.png" alt="&#x2202; &#x03B7;(t) = g(&#x03B7;(t),&#x03C6;(t))
 t  " class="math-display" ></center>

<p>Vector &#x03B7; represent the state variables of cells and
the vector &#x03C6; represent the dependent
boundary conditions, <i>i.e.</i> the
variables considered as boundary conditions by a cell, but depending upon
the complete model state. This dependent boundary conditions are
required to make the cells correspond to well-posed problems.
These variables are often called state variables, and prognostic
variables in meteorology.
</p>

</li><li> Transfers which are determined by constraint equations such as:

    <center class="math-display" >
<img
src="mini_ker_tex4ht_tex1x.png" alt="&#x03C6;(t) = f (&#x03B7;(t),&#x03C6; (t))  " class="math-display" ></center>
These equations are often called algebraic equations, and in meteorology
diagnostic equations.
</li></ol>
