 <tt>\newlength{\gnat}</tt>

 The <tt>\newlength</tt>  command defines  the mandatory  argument, <tt>\gnat</tt>,
  as a
 length  command  with  a value  of 0in.   An error  occurs  if a <tt>\gnat</tt>
 command already exists.
